If you won the $1.6BN lottery . . .

I was idly musing about this. What would I do?

The thing is, 99% of it would be irrelevant to my happiness. Maybe 99.9%. So what to do with the rest?

I’d probably want to give it away. Yes, yes, we’re all close friends, I won’t forget. But after that, I mean. And by giving it away, I don’t really mean all to the taxman. I can think of many worthy causes in addition to supporting municipal functions.

So suppose one sets up a self-managed 501c3 charitable foundation and contributes the IRS limit, which I believe would be 60% of the pre-tax winnings? Pay roughly 50% total income tax on 40% of said winnings, have the other 20% as after-tax income to do who knows what with, and spend the rest of your life managing the charity and thereby doing good by the world with the remaining 60%?

Would this work?

I'd have my TR6 restored at the finest of all British roadster restoration establishments, oh and maybe buy a beer or 12.

Myself and two buddies, have already decided we would buy VIR or build ourselves a new track convenient to all three of us.

As we’re all Porsche 911 nuts, it would be GT3RS’s for everyone.

The rest would be invested and lived off the interest. Destination classified.

My SC will need some head studs soon... I humbly ask for the tools for the rebuild...

Edit...If I don't pull the covers, then the head studs are ok? right?

I second that emotion.

These would all get A LOT of money

St Judes Hospital
Wounded Warrior
My local First Aid squad, Fire Dept, Police Dept

Establish secret trust funds for the grandkids that have benchmarks they must meet in order to get the money.

I'd buy a few thousand acres of the best farmland in West Virginia that includes extensive timber a nice lake and a great hill for snowboarding. Then I'd build my version of the Yellowstone main house.

After that....probably a surfin' safari.

Funny. I have a strategy for the 2-3 times per decade I buy a ticket.

50% goes to a foundation that I will spend the rest of my life giving away.
50% gets blown living like an idiot.

I’d buy Steve a cup of coffee and I don’t even care how much it would cost.

On the odd chance one of you win,

I’m seeing so many charities that are run by idiots or are flat out scams. Be careful before giving.

And donate anonymously so that they can’t keep bugging you.

I'd see the world with 5 star accommodation and travel every step of the way.

After that I'd help a bunch of people and try to make a real difference.
- At some point I'd "produce" a movie or two.

With $1.6BN you could build the ultimate restoration workshop staffed with the best people from around the globe & then pay someone to run it for you. Meanwhile you could travel the world looking for barn finds for restoration in your work shop.

Strange that when fantasizing about winning a large amount of money, the default thought is to figure out how to get rid of it.
Give it away, spend it, whatever it takes to just make it all go away quickly.
Why bother winning it in the first place?
I'd prefer to keep it and put it to work earning me more money.

I suppose I might buy some struggling companies to see if I could "fix" them, just for sport. And profit of course

Soooo.... why did you waste $ on that second ticket after purchasing the winning ticket?

Lotto Logic ?

My life would instantly change too .... and not in a way that would probably enjoy....

So I don't buy EVEN one ticket....
