When he handed it to me, one of his sisters exclaimed "Orv, I didn't know you had a gun!" (Gasp...)

My father in law replied "I got it from a German acquaintance at Anzio".

His sister replied "my, that was awfully nice of him".

LOL! Good story.

My fil was one of 5 brothers. Grew up poor in Oklahoma. He was the enforcer of the boys. His brothers would start stuff on purpose just so he’d jump in and finish it. When I started dating his daughter who was only 18 at the time I had no idea. First thing I did getting out of college was to buy the fastest motorcycle there was in 76. KZ-900. I was so proud I headed over to their house. He told me point blank if he ever caught me with his daughter on it he would whip my ass. He was 52 and of course I thought he was an old man. I was the middle of 3 brothers and was the enforcer for them. Did golden gloves growing up in Texas.

He inherited his dad’s 38 colt which I got. His dad ran a bar and was the local bookie. Carried that 38 at all times. It’s well worn but still in great shape. I think he got it in the mid 30’s. At my fil’s funeral service the kids of those brothers and grandkids were telling stories about the dad and mentioned the gun. I got it out and showed them. They had only heard about it. Four of those brothers were in WW2 at the same time. Two in pacific the other 2 Europe. The youngest to young. After the war they all got college degrees and my fil played football while another brother played b-ball. He worked out till he was 96 and lived to 98. Outlived all his brothers by 10 years. Was a great guy.
