Phone Mount for Cars.

Ok, I am sure this subject has been beaten to death.
When I went to use the high end that I bought from a track vendor, and it did work better than most, but the suction cup failed and isn't replaceable.
So, once again I did a search, but nothing that came up looked very sturdy, I do take road trips to track events and I like to use one in my track cars as well.
I remembered that a friend who is a major techie, had a pretty good one, so I reached out and his response was anything by Ram Mounts, now they never showed up in any of my searches, so I Googled them and liked what I saw, it has replacement parts if you want to change or replace something, solid materials, definitely not inexpensive (as far as phone Mounts go), as it was $90 shipped
But I must admit, it is definitely the most solid mount that I have ever used.

I have a Ram Mount on my motorcycle. Thing is rock solid.

Not a fan of anything thing windshield mounted. Dont like obstructions. The phone mounts I use slide into the CD slot on my radio, and lock in.

Similar to this.

If the stereo in your car/truck has blue tooth, then leave the phone in your pocket and connect to the stereo via the blue tooth connection. It works in my 2007 Chevy with an aftermarket Pioneer unit (also has GPS) and so far in the 5 years I have had the Pioneer unit there have been no issues. I was told by the shop where I bought my last one that the newest version can also process text messages, but I am happy with the one I have.
The stock Ford stereo in the 2014 Escape also uses blue tooth just fine.

Scosche Magic Mount. When the suction cup goes bad, dump and get another one.

The plate can be stuck on the back of the case. The Scosche magnets are really strong.

I have used Ram mounts for 10 years. Simple 1" ball mount and I firmly attach it to my dash. My favorite solution for both GPS map software and on track performance data.

Some states have laws against anything stuck to the windshield.

For my 911 I have the phone mount sold by Rennline. It is a ring that attaches to the clock. It has a neat magnet mount for a phone that is on a ball swivel. I keep my phone in an otter box cover. The magnet sticks to the phone just fine through the rubber case.

The bonus is the swivel mount is real easy to remove, leaving a ball that is the exact size my Garmin GPS attaches to. I can just snap on the GPS and I am good to go. I only use it for trips. For the phone, I don't talk and drive or text. I have dictated a text message on a few occasions. I do use the phone mount for finding an address I have never been to. I will take some pictures of the setup sometime. It works great.

This is it. And no, I am not affiliated with them. I bought mine from Pelican.

I actually used a two different brand magnets and stuck them to the underside of the Pelican case. Some heavy duty clear tape prevents any scratches/damage to the phone case. The plates may interfere with a wireless charger - but I don't have one so not an issue.

That is exactly what I did, so the plate wasn't unsightly. And yes, it did affect the wireless charging.

The missus has the Scosche mount in her car so have have the scosche plate on the inside of my cover which is a think plastic cover with a grippy silicone coating. It works fine when used as in the pic above.
I just got a Rennline mount for the boxster and assumed it would be the same. Whether I use the Rennline ring or Scosche pad or both side by side or both stacked it doesn't matter, the Rennline magnets aren't strong enough to hold the phone through the case. I'm going to have to see if I can use some other magnets that I have to augment the magnets that can in the mount.

I'm bummed this mount wasn't cheap and was a Christmas present.

After looking online, I found the Ram mounts and liked it, but the suction cup has failed. The mount falls off the windshield all the time. I ended up removing the suction cup and screwing the base of the Ram mount to the metal above the windshield.

Edit: this is in my track car, and I use my iPhone with the Harry’s LapTimer app for timing and video only.

I'm always at a loss for a good phone mount, I have a RAM around somewhere but I don't even know where it is. I'm with Vinny...I cannot have anything above the top of dashboard. It's illegal, (though widely ignored), and I want it just below that sightline. I'll take a picture tomorrow of where I put it in my Malibu, it's actually pretty awesome.

Here's what I've been using for a couple years. It's small, discreet, and holds well.

I've found that upgrading the stereo to one that is android auto and carplay allows me to not give a damn where the phone is. The thing could be under the seat and I can still use about every feature on the phone.

Great subject. I use a sticky magnetic mount something like Dixie's above. It works well except I did not use the double back tape part and got impatient. It is basically glued to the dash. The next owner of the car is going to be faced with the problem of removing it or using it.

I did not know that suction cups holders on the car window are legal in certain States. I used a suction cup garmin map on a suction cup many years ago in Palm Springs. It kept falling off the rental car windshield. Annoying. I do not like my windshield obscured either.

Cheers, Guy.

I have had a Tackform mount fin my Tundra or six years. Not cheap but amazingly well made:

I can't have anything on top the dash or mounted to the windshield...just like Cousin Vinny!

Having lots of older cars that don’t have CarPlay, I’ve dealt with this topic a lot. My current favorite is a MagSafe case with a MagSafe charging phone holder that attaches to the vent. They fit well in just about every car and attach via magnets, it’s a very secure hold and easily snaps on/off with one hand. I think my current one is a Scosche but several companies make them. In most cars it puts the phone just below eye level so it’s minimal distraction if you’re using GPS. Though I will add that for anything that gets driven a lot, I just convert to a CarPlay radio.
