I’ve posted that a couple of times. I hope it doesn’t happen here, but that seems to be the theme with most of our recent disasters occurring in desirable areas.

Wow, 40 people arrested in one week in an evacuation zone around the largest natural disaster in the history of the United States...that's a lot. Really scary.

I don't understand. Percentage of population arrested for looting makes it ok? What does population have to do with it? Is number of looters or arsonists per 1000 residents actually a thing? Is that like the whole theft of property worth less than $950 gets a pass thing? It seems to me that one arsonist or looter (or person that steals $945 is a scary thing).

Speeder: I’ve seen various reports that either 9 or 16 of the arrestees were looters… the rest, curfew violators, drunk, carrying weapons, etc.

My opinion . Anyone caught/proven to be looting automatic 20 year sentence . You are a POS and no value to society . Better yet pull behind courthouse and one bullet to the head .
Yeah yeah it's too harsh blah blah blah . It's time to get back to punishing criminals instead of coddling . End of rant . |

It’s just a fact, this is where more people live than other places in the USA, for a lot of reasons.
And one burglar in an evacuation zone is too many, don’t get me wrong. It’s also logical because burglars like to steal from unoccupied houses and buildings, whether the owners are at work, out of town or evacuated due to an emergency. It’s not new or confined to Los Angeles, cavemen were doing it in Bedrock. I know that “looting” sounds more ominous and triggering for Fox News watchers but my definition of looting is a mob cleaning out a 7-11 or Autozone during a riot, not a cat burglar. YMMV, obviously. |

I know but posting 40 mugshots next to each other and calling them all looters plays better for a certain crowd. 40 people arrested in a week during a disaster of this magnitude is not significant. I agree that anyone proven in a court of law to be a burglar in a disaster area should be locked up for a very long time.

If you catch what appears to be a looter but not in the act/cannot prove it...the best police can do is let them go or charge them with some other law they violated.
A fellow running down the street away from the fire with a big screen is innocent unless you saw him take it. Looters should be shot on sight. They are a far cry from a burglar (who should also be shot on sight).

Fint, I’m with you 100% as long as you have some way of knowing that it’s not a resident running down the street with his beloved TV. IOW, it’s better to use the justice system we have, as satisfying as it would be to go, “old west,” on some of these MFers.

From an article about the 1906 earthquake and fire is San Francisco:
"The army was brought in to control the fires (which they did with dynamite and even artillery barrages) and stop the looting. In all, 500 presumed looters were shot."

I keep hearing abut the Santa Ynes Reservoir in Pacific Palisades. They say it was drained last February to repair the liner. But looking on Google Earth, it had water in it in 2009, then was empty in 2011 and has been empty ever since. It was empty in January of last year. So it's been empty for 13 or 14 years. That's a long time to make a repair.

New flare up near Hansen Dam. They're on top of it quickly with helicopters, so should be OK.
Fwiw, the best way to watch what is active and top priority is the flight tracker websites. Follow the cluster of choppers, and you'll get a good idea (unless the wind is too violent for aircraft).
