Viva Las Vegas - Help me, Tabs

On the way in to work this morning, NPR had an article on Hal Rothman's book "Neon Metropolis." It went into the mecca that Vegas has become.

At lunch, I told my co-workers that this article suggested Vegas is the place to move.

Reason One: work is easily found. In fact, there aren't enough workers to staff the jobs there. And it's quite easy to advance up the ranks, etc.

Reason Two: a person with very little education can fairly much become an model citizen of the upper-middle class. Vegas is the last city since Detroit in which such ranks can be bestowed on those who have not gone to college. Education means nearly nothing to the city.

Reason Three: the pay scale is higher than many other places of its ilk. The gaming portion of Las Vegas is being modeled in at least 32 other states for future resorts and establishments of its kind. But to make the bucks, you have to go to LV.

Reason Four: well run, honest, caters to your every need.

Would I move there? I don't think so. But it's nice to hear that a city is doing well, as is its state, while the city and (more importantly) the state I live in, doesn't even have a budget, and is now not paying its state employees.

Oh well... we here in sin city don't need as much electrictity if we glow in the dark.

I am a little new to the state, so I don't know the ins and outs yet.
That my disclaimer...meaninig I don't know what I am talking about.

But here are my uninformed observations.

The population here is growing by leaps and bounds, there are new housing starts EVERYWHERE. People are coming from everywhere in the USA..it' seems like a Gold Rush.as seen in their license plates and not in the tourist areas either. Lots of old people..me and lotsw of young people with familys...and not much in between. Lots of the young women have tatoos..The stores all seem to be Walmart, Home Depot, Marshalls, PetCo, Office Depot, Burger King, Del Taco and a Starbucks Everywhere but not much else. Housing prices are not so cheap anymore...3400 sq ft on a half acre lot at 471K.

Nevada has it's own budget crisis going...it's own County Commissioners scandals going on...I know a lot of the construction up here is pi$$ poor....I know that the state is run by the Good ole Boys who never move out of the same neighborhood... The Casino are honest as the day is long....simply the percentages on the machines are thievery enough...theres a reason they call them one armed bandits...they return anywhere from $0.75 to $0.98 on every dollar thats put in the machine so why steal. And there are some dishonest people here...who would tell you anything to seperate you from your dollar. The water up here while EPA safe...it's not advisable to give to your pets...arsenic, lead, Magnesium, Purochlorate, and enough mineral content in the water that nobody would consider Jesus walking on water up here a miracle.

Also up here I don't go near the Strip nor gamble....except once in a while to get a Buffet or play poker...and when I am down there I just get real quiet and watch everybody...

That's for sure. LV shopping is not to be believed. The Warner Bros. store in Ceasar's (the cartoon gods rest its soul), made $1.1 million per year in the gallery alone. As an example of the freaks who shopped there, Michael Jackson (the burned glove one), wanted the store shut down whenever he entered it. The best part is the store manager refused - his business didn't compare to all others - so he had to shop with the rest of the Vegas detritus, visitors and otherwise.

Ah, the good ole' days.

But it sure seems that way driving around...especially in the newer areas...everything seems to a chain store...I just think the new areas havn't had time to develope smaller busineses. But give it time.

Hmmmm...As you know I have my legal problem involving my house...because of that I am in Limbo...So I can't go ahead and trick out my house to make myself comfortable. also that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. So in that sense I am not very happy, and makes adjustment that much harder.

The summer heat is a bit daunting...105* plus days is a bit much even though I lived in the inland valley's all my life...but if I had a pool it would help ameoriate that, see. The late evenings and early morninings are very pleasant, I have GOOD neighbors. This is like most towns, it has all the conviences you could ask for. I do miss my friends in CA, I just can't drop by and see them anymore. Also there are places I used to hang out where I was a known and friendly with a number of people... So those are hard adjustments.

Theres far more variety with 20 million people or so in SO CAL, but I don't miss the congestion, and I wouldn't go back to the town I came from... As far as fashion and style goes...this place ain't a trend setter but a trend follower....but all in all I could be happy here, and I am begining to like my house inspite of it's problems. I think making the house comfortable is the key for me. If I had the bucks I'd probably chose Monceito, CA as the ultimate place to live...temperate climate, proximity to amenities, great ambience and Ophra as a neighbor.

As far as a Desert Town goes...This is about as good as it gets..it's got the amenities plus all the action you could want. Oh and my water bill for last month was $23.00.

Just a friendly reminder: It's out in the middle of the dessert. There is good reason why almost nobody chose to live out in the middle of the dessert until everywhere else was full. Once again, it is out in the middle of the dessert. There is absolutely nothing there, except what modern 'contruction for the masses' and cynical hucksterism can build, (as quickly as humanly possible). Now I realize that the average American doesn't need much in the way of a daily dose of culture, Thank you very much, but a pre-fab, 100% fake experience of living in the middle of the wretched dessert, ("it's a dry heat"), fer chrisakes, is harsh solution, IMO.

The whole, 'everyone on earth moving to Las Vegas' thing seems like the plot of a post-modern, sci-fi/horror flick to me, am I the only one?? There isn't enough money, or high-paying, no education required jobs, (what a recipe for a great society),

, or free housing IN THE WORLD to make me want to live there for a week, MUCH LESS FOREVER!!

Reality check, anyone??

Or is having 20 million lost souls climbing over each other in So Cal to get at the last little piece of paradise any better...and over half of them don't speak English to boot... Try getting across town on the freeway system during rush hour...and that hour seems to get earlier every year....try a government bureaucracy (LA County) where one hand doesn't know what the other one is doing. California is largely paradise lost...paved over with a parking lot.

As I said if I had the bucks I would live in Monceito, Ca right next to Ophra...

I don't think Las Vegas is the end all be all place to live it has it's drawbacks... I'll be here until my legal problem gets resolved, that maybe 2 years down the road...and by that time I will know if I want to stay or not....the desert in of itself is not a bad place to live..it has it's own austere beauty which I can appreciate.

Maybe most people's so-called "standards" in this country, have simply lowered.

Thats why Celine Deon paid $10,000,000.00 for a house in Lake Las Vegas. Lower standards are a matter of perception...you trade one thing for another...and is either really better than another. There are Trader Joes markets in So Cal as well as here. There are Walmart stores everywhere, there are Home Depot Stores everywhere, there are Tiffany stores in most of the major cities including here. There are less people and cleaner air here than in LA, there is greater variety in LA than here and more moderate summers. Simply a trade off.

Our head of sales here at Clampett lived in Vegas. She really had nothing bad to say about it - and this was five or so years ago.

What I'd miss if I moved there is the ocean, Hollywood Bowl and undoubtedly, Angelyne street racing me in her pink Corvette.

Montecito CA - I grew up in Santa Barbara and will always love the area. Now having lived in San Diego for 15 years I think Rancho Santa Fe has eclipsed Montecito as the creme of California. Situatued between Los Angeles and San Diego this area offers loads of cultural possibilities, great weather, open space, horse trails, and the most interesting realty offerings I've ever seen. All you can see are the mail boxes and an occasional roofline, no bling at all. Of course the typical $2.5M home is a bit steep for a engineer like myself but I will make it happen one day.

Like tabs mentions, the desert offers its own unique beauty. I have some friends who live in LV and PHX and love it. I like warm weather too but consistent 105+ is too much for me...and not to mention my Carrera.
