Saw this 1951 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 parked around the corner from my house. The '88' is thought by many to be America's first muscle car, predating Chrysler's 300C by 6 years.
On a side note, the Jackie Brenston song 'Rocket 88', is widely considered to be the very first Rock & Roll tune ever recorded. Brenston was backed by Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm.

My dad graduated from HS in 1950 and told me about the significance of the Olds Rocket 88. My old man never had a dime in those days but he had a rich friend who had a brand new 88.
He told me this story in the ‘70s when he had his dream car, a new V-12 E-type roadster. He said that no car today, (at the time he told me this), had the impact on people as the Rocket 88 at the time. Cars had been either out of production, (during WW2), or really bland for several years until that car came along. It made a sonic boom on culture. |

@speeder, Buicks and Lincolns were the schizzle, the Olds was the rocket. As a child I remember 4 we had including a Starfire. Then my dad bypassed Cadillacs as he became well paid and went right for a Continental with suicide rear doors. He had a string of at least 3 of those too. They were bloated but very nice to take to the prom.
Except I drove my '57 Corvette. |
