Of B17s and car shows
I'm not a big fan of car shows. There's typically no shade, and it's hot. Plus, I feel most cars that show up are repeats. It's great some guy is proud of his '67 GTO, but to me it looks pretty much like any GTO I've ever seen.
So why the preceding whinge? To underscore that yesterday's car show was different. An elderly gentleman showed up towing a Wright Cyclone engine from a B17 behind his WWII Jeep. I found that thing fascinating, and he was thrilled to have someone asking questions. We must have talked about that engine for 15 minutes. So, what cool, oddball, stuff have you encountered at a car show? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1744653408.jpg |
That is very cool!!!

you should go to a threshing show.
all sorts of great **** like old engines at them. way cooler than car shows. last threshing show i went to there was a M4A1 sherman tank, running. it was fantastic. |
I saw my life pass before me as I dodged a Mustang at a Cars and Coffee last week.

Someone fired up an Allison V12 at a car show once. It was towed on its own separate trailer. Show was held at an air museum, though.

Pretty interesting show in Upstate NY:
https://www.thegasup.org/gallery Saw a Cord at a cruise night in North Houston years ago. Not something you see out and about. |
The Keels and Wheels show has some pretty eclectic stuff. Unfortunately, the gallery pics are mostly people..

That engine would’ve been interesting. When I go to cars and coffee, I breeze through the area. Nothing has excited me in a long time.

An aside I hope y'all find humorous...
I was standing beside my car using the window as a mirror and fixing my hair. That's when a young man looked in my car and I heard, "huh, it has a whore-speed in it." Half shocked, and half laughing, I turned to tell the guy I was with what I heard. "Dixie, he said four speed." |
Antique tractor shows have a lot of variety. I was at one a few years ago where a guy had an R-3350 (B 29) engine on a trailer. He fired it up and it was spectacular- smoke noise, vibrations. Turns out it was all fake. The engine was being turned over by a big electric motor and a massive sound system and some kind of smoke generator made the noise and smoke.
