Placing a value on a 1984 Carerra Cabrio
 

It is a driver, wear on the seat, rock chips, patina on the Fuchs wheels

Of course, never any wrecks, top in good shape. 250,000 miles, runs like a 911 is supposed to.


Initially, put value at $40,000, but I am thinking maybe that is a bit low.

What do y'all think?

No idea on the value these days. The old air-cooled cars have certainly appreciated. I would assume that if everything works, and the only issues are a few little cosmetic issues, that it would be at least 40.

Had a refresh 10 years ago or so, repaint, new top and all the rubber, top end done then too.

Pretty sure it is the original clutch though, how about that.

Air conditioner works about like it did when new, mediocre.

I would price it at 50k . That gives you some room to haggle . Out of town buyers might want some price relief for shipping as an example . So if your bottom line is 45k you have left a potential buyer 5k of haggle/wiggle room . Obviously you make the numbers what you want them to be . GLWS

The cost for insurance is 80% liability typically. I imagine classic cars with high values do push premiums up.

Take the 50K valuation. Add in 15K because you won't look at this for a while.

And use $65K. Should be about the same as insuring it for 50K. Report back if I am wrong. Sort of curious on this.

Insurance value is higher because it is the cost of replacing the car in the same condition. Beside having to find the car, there is PPI, shipping, taxes..
To replace your car you aren't looking for the best deal, you are looking for the best car in the same condition as yours.

Ideally, this car ends up at my son's house in about 10 years

This brings up a dumbarse question. A lot of insurance companies will insure for an agreed upon value. Even my good neighbor, statefarm called me and suggested I get the 911 appraised and insured for a pie in the sky value of my own(ish) choosing.

I'm wondering if I chose XXXXXXX and state farm said "OK" how that would work out in the big picture.

For Tobra's car, I'd wonder (the coghead in me) if it were an original clutch, or what the leakdown was... but for insurance purposes...

$40k sounds low to me considering the details above. I'm glad that you're not selling.

I’m not sure it would actually bring $50k, but if it were mine I’d insure for $50k agreed value. That should more than cover you if something were to happen, and I doubt any classic car insurance company will squawk at that.

My agent says there are two kinds of plans that have a $value.
One is where you agree the car is worth X (and no more). The company can pay less.
The other is where the company agrees they will pay X in a total loss without haggling.

I just upped the insurance on my Hagerty policy for my 1983 with 120k miles to $65k agrred/guaranteed value. The premium is $1,180/year. It’s a lot considering I only drive it about 2k miles a year but every time I drove it insured for $30k I was nervous considering today’s values…..I guessed at the value btw and just picked a number I was comfortable with……basically, if I totaled it, what would it cost me to get another one in similar condition

I insured my 86 911 Targa with Haggerty for an agreed amount of $58K. I bought it for $54K and my premiums are about $750 a year. I’m not sure how long I’ll keep it or if little Rocket man would want it.

This is not helpful but a car like this in Aus would be over $120,000 AUD (original Aust delivered RHD).
