Love Me A Small Town

This morning in Annapolis Royal, we were walking along the sidewalk and met two women headed in the other direction. We said ,"Good Morning!" and when they responded in kind, they were in harmony! It was one of those things that puts a smile on your face.
At the flower shop when my wife picked out a couple of bunches of tulips the owner said, "I'm not letting you take this one home!" and tossed one bunch into the garbage pail! He then selected two better examples to go with the remaining bunch and only charged her for two.
At the grocery store my wife got into a conversation with another lady who wanted to see baby pictures of the donkey she bought three weeks ago. They yakked for a bit and we went on with our grocery shopping. When we got to the checkout, the lady was ahead of us. When she was finished, she confirmed with the cashier that a bag of carrots she had was paid for then passed it to my wife "for your equines!".
Just another day in a real small town.
Love it!

Best
Les

Late during the season in the Palo Verde region of AZ, a farm wagon full of different melons is left for everyone to enjoy at the community center. The farm workers cull some of the premium stuff and the farm owner is all in on it. Sweetest Watermelon on the planet.

Do people whistle there?
I hate whistling. lol

In my 'burb I found that people are much less likely to road rage you. Why? It could be your neighbor who you are giving the finger to. I call it "Pleasantville." Now population is over 40K. So not super small.

Small towns are great until you have health problems and need a specialist. Sorry for ruining the vib.

oldE 04-16-2025 02:12 PM

Sorry. I'd have to listen to YouTube to pick up the tune. Never saw the show.
How 'bout the theme from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"? :D
That could be the theme music for Pelican Parts Off Topic!

One disadvantage....can't go into any store without seeing and talking to half the people you see. Have to allow extra time.

Have lived in both...much prefer the smaller town.

One of my former co-workers lives in Okarche, Oklahoma and she is a third generation resident. She knows pretty much everyone there. One day she received a phone call from a lady that lives a few blocks away. her son had gone around a corner, making the tires sequel, and then floored it to make lost of noise.

She heard her son pull up out in the driveway, and stood at the front door, waiting for him. As soon as he came in the door, she went into full bore mom mode, and asked why he cornered hard and used up tires, and then hit the gas to use up gas. He stood there is stunned silence, and finally asked "How did you know?" and she just replied I know everything you do, right and wrong!

She never told him about the mom spy network amongst all the moms in town watching everything. People that move there in the 90s are still considered the newcomers.

I spent a few years in San Marcos, TX back in the early 60s. I heard my parents tell one of my buddies mom to go ahead and paddle me if I act up. Of course I was always a little angel. ;)

I wrote this song close to 20 years ago. It's called, "A Real Small Town "

Well the kids have grown up and we've settled down
And bought ourselves a house near a real small town
The scenery is pretty and the neighbors really fine
But the wife can't understand what takes up all my time

'Cause every time I go to town you know it never fails
To get a pound of coffee or a half a pound of nails
Or walking through the grocery store and looking through the aisles
I'm greeting all my neighbors and I'm giving back their smiles

And it's "Hey Bob! How's the wife, how's the job
How's the kids, No kidding?
Well isn't she a dear
Did I hear you say and I saw the other day...
Ain't it funny how nothing ever happens 'round here

I wrote it (and two more verses) one weekend after it took about 20 minutes to walk from one side of the little farmers market to the other. :D

Nah.. Got some really good specialists about 15 minutes away. Worst case, if I want top notch, I drive about 2 hours to get to the really good specialists. Dad had cancer and Mom had PAH. It was never really a problem.

That awesome Les :)!

You can drive from Mayberry to Duke faster that you can drive from Jax Beach into town these daze ;)

our small town (the incorporated town itself) was voted best small town in America by an apparently poorly informed magazine. couple films took place here in years past too.

old brick buildings, a Main Street, two coffee shops, antique shop and several restaurants. I think the main measure of the success for a small town is how much patchouli you smell on the weekends when the tourists are visiting.

we do have a good hospital and aren't terribly far from civilizati0on if you need specialists (Hopkins about 3hrs). it's not all it's cracked up to be but it is a darn bit better than the soulless rat race existence so many live on the other side of the Chesapeake.

Life Flight Helicopters are a contracted option to get you to a trauma center.

Story told to me by small town friend.
9th grade boy moves to small town.
Gets to know everybody and is thinking about going to the school dances.
Comes to find out every girl in the school has already been asked to go to the senior prom by the 10th grade.
He got to go to be the photographer, NO date.
