pneumonia vaccine for over 50 crowd?

Anyone got one of the pneumococcal vaccines?

I understand there are 2 types. Seems it's recommended for folks over 50.

Thoughts?

The 'enhanced' version for over 50 gave me terrible headaches for over a day afterwards.
I took it 3 years in a row before I asked my Dr. about it. He said he has heard numerous complaints about it....just ask for the normal vaccine.

The last 2 years, I did that, and no more headaches.

I've received both the Prevnar 13 and 20, no problem for me.

I'm asking my GP about it next visit. had pneumonia not long back and ended up hospitalized for 3 days. took MONTHS to recover. months. terrifying.

pneumonia takes out a lot of older people.. it's death weapon of choice for the elderly.

I’ve had bronchitis and pneumonia in the past so I got the shot just after I turned 60

So is it yearly? How does it work?

I just asked my doctor, he said once and done.

I would swear I got a pneumonia vaccine but after Mike said once and done I had to look and now I'm not sure what they were giving me!

My wife and I both received the shots . Not sure which version but no adverse reactions for either of us .

I think it's a good idea.

I've been really sick the past few days with Influenza A, I cannot imagine what a bout of pneumonia would feel like.

I received the Previnar 20 shot over a year ago. No issues, and I have had the Shingles vaccine as well.

As a kid living in Hawaii I had pneumonia twice. I remember waking up in a plastic tent over the bed. I never want pneumonia again.

I'm curious if the people who get this shot also got the COVID shots?

masraum 04-23-2025 09:18 AM

Thanks, folks. Lots of good info. We have both have Shingrex vaccine. We feel like something like pneumonia is another one of those things that is good to be vaccinated for as you get older. I'm generally pretty healthy, but better safe than sorry.

There are two pneumonia vacs that you get spread apart a few years, at least that is what my doctor did. I also have the shingles vax.
