Tampa car chase.

A 100+ mph high speed chase on Gandy Bridge ended in a fiery crash. The driver (31) and passenger (32) sustained minor injuries.

What stuns me about this story? That cars have become extremely safe.

Growing up in South Tampa we'd do over 100 everytime we crossed Gandy. Well sometimes we could get over 100 in our '70's ****wagons.
There were drag races every Saturday night on the east bound bridge.

I ran across a pic from another angle. How the heck that's survivable is amazing

I remember training on the all new 2016 XC90 and they said from 2003 to 2015 there were 94 fatalities in the XC90. 89 of them were in the other car. An XC90 collided with a Camaro at a combined speed of 100mph. The Camaro and the passengers were gone. The XC90 was crushed to the windshield and the passengers walked away. The doors still opened and closed normally. Volvo investigates every serious accident in Sweden to find ways to make their cars safer (don’t know if this is still true).

It doesn't look like a steering wheel airbag deployed. Didn't replace it after the last accident? That makes the survival all the more impressive.

According to one of the articles, it was a Supra.

Quote:

A trooper on patrol along the Gandy Bridge at about 1 a.m. saw Ramnarine in a Toyota Supra traveling at 93 mph in a 55-mph speed zone, according to an FHP report.

FHP officials said the trooper attempted a traffic stop, but Ramnarine fled eastbound on the bridge at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

The trooper then conducted a PIT (precision immobilization technique) maneuver on the Supra at the east end of the bridge.

It caused the vehicle to rotate onto the shoulder, collide with a light pole, and catch fire.

Ramnarine suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital for medical care.

A passenger in the vehicle, a 32-year-old Tampa man, also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

Ok I can sort of see that.

I'm surprised at the speeds the cops are willing to do a PIT maneuver. No sympathy for the perps but at certain speeds it's pretty much guaranteed to be a huge mess.

I was thinking the same thing, but the driver had already proven they were willing to put the public at risk in their speed before the cops tried to pull them over and they could have very easily hurt or killed an innocent person if allowed to keep going.

So the cop caused it.
Lovely.

A930Rocket 05-05-2025 07:33 PM

Let me guess. The car was stolen and obviously the perps don’t care about it. Or innocent bystanders lives.

If only there was a common denominator.

No, the cops ended it.

The driver caused it by failing to stop when the cops lit him up.

My Jax buddy grenaded his '67 Chevelle convertable motor trying to keep up with a 944 over one of the bridges. years ago...

It wuz prolly Byron :D

93 mph in an '87 Supra Turbo was time to shift into 4th ...

We did 140 in the Okefenokee swamp... only risk was sunning gators... and US ;)

I used to use Grandy bridge for an "Italian tune-up" in my 914.

Fun fact: When I was in high school in Tampa (Hillsborough county) in the '70's you had to wait until 1:00 to buy beer. In Pinellas county (St Pete, Clearwater) which was across the Gandy bridge you could buy beer all day and there was a liquor story just across the bridge. Many early morning trips were made in access of 100 mph to buy beer. :D
