Chisum 1970 with John Wayne was a favorite of mine.

KUNG FU turned westerns on their ear and gave another perspective.

Mel Brooks himself said it wouldn't be made today:

Quote:
The Oscar winner discussed PC culture in a recent interview with BBC Radio 4, calling it “the death of comedy.”

“No, no, I mean maybe ‘Young Frankenstein.’ Maybe a few. But never ‘Blazing Saddles,’ because we have become stupidly politically correct, which is the death of comedy,” he said when asked if he thinks he could get films like “Blazing Saddles,” “The Producers,” or “Young Frankenstein” made today. “It’s okay not to hurt feelings of various tribes and groups. However, it’s not good for comedy. Comedy has to walk a thin line, take risks. Comedy is the lecherous little elf whispering into the king’s ear, always telling the truth about human behavior.”

The Virginian
The Rifleman
Bat Masterson
Tombstone Territory
Laredo
High Chapperal
Wanted Dead or Alive
Zane Gray Theater
Wagon Train

Lone ranger

"Gunsmoke" considered the best ever. I've watched every episode and it is such a good TV show, forget about western, I often watch re-runs and still enjoy them as much as when I watched the first time through. Jame Arness being the main reason why. His character Matt Dillon is amazing.

Interesting.. You guys must be from a different generation than me. I just turned 60 and I have never watched or even heard of half of those movies. Also while I have heard of Bonanza, Gunsmoke etc, I have never seen one episode of any of those shows. It just wasnt a thing when I was a kid. None of my friends I can think of have ever seen them either. Probably why I still don't care for Old Westerns now. I did like Yellowstone but not the earlier era spinoffs as much. I did see and love Blazing Saddles though! I guess I was watching the Brady Bunch and Looney Tunes..

comedy is culture, and culture has moved on. the fact that you havnt, doesnt mean mel brooks hasnt. he clearly knows more about comedy than you.

there was a time when it was bold to make fun of white washed middle america's obsessions with the wild west. now we make movies where we shoot racists. calling the white middle class "morons" is pretty lame today. doesnt even wiggle the needle anymore. thats what happened to culture.

The topic is Westerns.

The Searchers.

https://www.tpr.org/arts-culture/2013-04-09/the-texas-history-behind-john-fords-the-searchers

The film was based on a novel by Alan LeMay, who in turn based his book on the true-life story of Cynthia Ann Parker. As a nine-year-old girl, Parker was abducted by Comanche Indians from her prairie home in 1836 Texas. She spent years among the Comanche, eventually marrying chief Peta Nocona, with whom she had three children--Prairie Flower, Pecos, and Quanah Parker. Meanwhile, family members, including her uncle, James Parker, spent years looking for her. Cynthia Ann Parker was eventually found and removed from the Comanche after the Battle of Pease River in 1860.

Then Empire of the Summer Moon, in my opinion, and I have read a lot of tribal history, the most remarkable accounting of the time.

I'm younger than you (almost 55). I remember adults watching those when I was a kid (4-12). And when there's 1 TV in the house, and an adult is watching something, that means that you're watching. THat's the only way that I remember them. I barely/vaguely remember Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Wild Wild West, and some of the various movies.

well i certainly learned that mel brooks was making funny movies mocking systemic racism and white washing by the time i had finished high school, so like ... skills issue. you guys sit and complain the education system isnt teaching kids useful things, and then cant figure out that you are the punchline in your favorite western? skills issue.

this isnt some advanced secret master skill, its just like ... what you were supposed to have learned in high school English class.

kinda like how you were supposed to learn in high school that vibrations dont cure cancer. germ theory is correct. sorry, that was high school biology. litterally nothing i post here is complicated secret elitest knowledge. i just went to high school, and sometimes i went to college.

one of the most effed up Westerns that I watched (with one eye closed and the other one all squinted up) is the Bone Tomahawk. with Kurt Russell. that movie gave me PTSD. I lost sleep.

good? you be the judge. It is soooooo disturbing and violent.
