R.I.P. Chuck Mangione

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">And now Chuck Mangione. Everyone knows &quot;Feels So Good.&quot; But did you know that the sounds of Chuck's &quot;Children of Sanchez&quot; was the music open to the 1979 Daytona 500 on CBS, following the eloquence of Ken Squier. He also authored a song used in Cannonball Run. True brass legend. <a href="https://t.co/uzzSEk7hfX">pic.twitter.com/uzzSEk7hfX</a></p>&mdash; Jay Coker (@jcoker1) <a href="https://twitter.com/jcoker1/status/1948440565386723655?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">July 24, 2025</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I have been playing a cd of his the last few weeks. I found it in a free box at a ferry crossing in B.C.

Heard about this today

My dad grew up on his street and used to hear Chuck practicing from his house

Steve Gadd also grew up in the same neighborhood. His brother is a local hair stylist my wife sometimes goes to

I get pizza from that neighborhood once a week and the neighborhood is now a dangerous slum

Two members of Chuck’s band, Gerry Niewood and Coleman Mellett, were killed in that plane crash that landed on the house in Buffalo back in 2009. Gerry Niewood played with Simon & Garfunkel at the concert in Central Park. You can hear Paul introduce Gerry on the recording. Gadd played drums at that concert.

Anyway, loved Chuck and his brother Gap. RIP

Chuck died about 10 miles from my house

Thanks for all the stories, guys.

I started listening to Mr. Mangione while a college student in the early 70's and he was a steadfast companion as I graduated and navigated into my post-college life.

What beautiful music!

Well that is terrible.

Our 1986-1987 stage band in high school. We had the opportunity to choose the music we played. I Was the drummer, Dave was the Sax player, Mark was the guitarist and Chris was the coronet player. We went to down to an epic music shop in Vancouver and chose the sheet music for "feels so good". The parts that were missing our conductor wrote out. We played this in our local concerts, then when on a trip we played at Disneyland, the QE and a great school in San Diego. Great times

Its a difficult piece of music, but epic.

RIP Chuck

I had his Land Of Make Believe album. Always enjoyed his music. I hate to say it but I think
Willie Nelson will be the next one to go . Hope not but...

Yup. Went to see Willie last summer and he didn’t show up. He looks pretty bad currently. My dog died that day and I was in no mood to go but drove the 2 hours anyway and then no Willie

It is a sad week with so many great ones passing but try to remember that their music lives on.
