Which E-bike should I buy?

No helmets, hauling azz as fast as the steep hills and our legs could peddle ... from Schwinn banana seats to my 4 decade old "college bike" I just gave away ....

Where and how you want to use it will affect your choice

EG here in Florida if I wanted to use one to hunt the WMAs it would have to be a pedal-assist-only type

I went utilitarian. Fat tires, multiple racks, huge (removable) battery for longer range. Has foot pegs for passenger if I remove the saddlebags and install rear seat-great for picnics in da woods. Foldable.

One thing to try: local bike shops that carry ebikes will sometimes have rentals/try it out bikes you can take home and ride. Itsa big $$$ and bike companies want your business.

He went in and tried some others while shopping, but found he didn't like the way they rode, so when he ended up with his rig, he knew he liked it. Evidently, there are some big differences in how they pedal assist/etc.

I always get a kick when he shows up to the local gravel rides on his e-mtb. It kills us below 20 mph, BUT... and this is a big BUT... If the ride goes above 20mph, he loses his advantage, the e motor turns off, and is suddenly pedaling a big fat dog. This makes for fun riding, if the group works together and on the flats pulls a nice paceline, we can drop him.

He (of course) catches up on the uphills, but it's a fun game to play. It's like Kyle Reese and Sarah Conner battling the terminator.

There are other ebikers on e-gravel bikes, but honestly, I have a hard time telling who's who these days with all the oversized tubing. The gravel e-bikers aren't gunners like the mtb dude, so they kind of mosey around in the back of the pack.

I saw a bunch of bikes like crowbob's at the beach last week. Looks good for sand and carrying stuff.

I want one.

but I actually need two. one for the trails and one to get to work.

right now, all I can afford is a "Me-Bike"....me, I'm powering the thing.

My wife went on an E-bike tour years back. She would NOT shut up about how great they are. I refused to buy something that would end in a dumpster soon after purchase. Ended up buying a Specialized Turbo Vado (city bike) 2nd hand for her. SHE LOVES IT.

Then I bought myself one. I LOVED IT. It was the wrong size. Sold it.

Just bought a Specialized Turbo Levo (mountain bike) when the new generation came out. Got a screaming deal and am very pleased.


Note to the haters. My experience? I always ride harder and end up sweatier on an E-bike. Somehow the little boost encourages me to push things more than a traditional bike.

There are really slow ones and really fast ones. Know which one you're getting :)

i think based on the prior two posts is "are there grizzly bears where you ride" a good starting question...

Here is what I'm looking at for my first e-bike for bike trail use. Seems kinda spendy to me, but what the hell, we only live once. That, and I can't really see how to pedal it, but the dealer just told me not to worry about it. No one gives a schitt. And I'm getting old anyway.

One thing I've always considered when thinking about getting an E-bike is how heavy is it and what would it be like to push it any distance to get back to my car for the ride home.
I think this way about getting a flat tire on my bike too.

E-bike that goes more than 20 mph and is hanging off your car bumper is not insured when the car gets hit in an accident.

I think background checks, mandatory license renewal, tax stamps and whatever else is needed to keep these lunatics from riding their bikes in an unauthorized manner.

Definitely a public safety issue. Liberty be damned!

I lost it yesterday when a teen on an ebike pulled out of the bike lane about 15 yards ahead of me and into my lane. We were doing about 45mph and and he proceeds to pop a wheelie and ride like that for a mile or so while moving from side to side in the lane. This was on a busy street. He proceeded to do it again after each stoplight. At the final light of our journey together he weaves through the stopped cars on my driver's side and says "I like your car". I flipped him off...

If he would have lost the wheelie, I would have crushed him. I kept changing lanes to avoid him.
