Its Bonneville week

Never gone, sure would like to.
Some of the builds created are off the chart.
Anybody ever gone or participated with a team?
Can't imagine that last shift into high gear and the rest of the run.

Bucket list but never been A friend and I plan to go next year

Old news, as I've posted this before, will post again as it's still in my all time 'Top 5 Favourite Car Projects', helped design the race car and involved with designing the conversion to run it at Bonneville

Sadly missed out on going to the salt where the guys broke the record for a Lakester class, they really had to work hard, wasn't a soft record, that was nearly 20yrs ago I'm still disappointed

A decal I designed is on a Bonneville car! (Along with about a million others!)

Gosh sad to report a fatality has occurred.
60 yr old driver was at the 2.5 mile marker when he crashed.
SCTA is the sanction body who made the announcement.

It's not the going fast that kills ya, it's the stopping suddenly that gets ya.
RIP to the driver.

In 2007 my Son and I went and it was a very surreal experience.

Right off the bat where you pay a fee for entrance the roadway drops down onto the lake bed that still had a couple inches of water over the salt, just a line of cones leading off into the distance that you stay to the right of.
Glad I was driving a rental.

After getting to the parking area the salt was dry and all kinds of contraptions for going fast and/or just going were scattered everywhere.

Got to see and her a few runs but the wind came up early afternoon and all runs were halted, despite that it's a cherished experience, I'd certainly go again!

We ran into Boyd Coddington at the last highway rest stop, that was only about a year before he passed on...

We can both say "oh yeah, I knew Boyd, we even took a pee together"

I tried posting this several times last night…

The car that wrecked was Speed Demon 2. This team holds almost every record for a piston powered vehicle and has done more runs over 400 MPH than all of their competitors combined.

The original driver died in early 2024 and this is a continuation of the team efforts with a different car (and driver) using spares from the original Speed Demon that is now on display at a museum.

CNN

A driver has died while taking part in the annual Speed Week event on Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, according to organizers.

The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA), which hosts the land speed racing event, announced on Sunday that 60-year-old Chris Raschke died while attempting a speed record.

“At approximately 3:03 p.m. Mountain Time today, driver Chris Raschke, age 60, was attempting a speed record and lost control of his land speed vehicle at approximately the 2 1/2 mile,” said the statement shared by the SCTA.

“Chris was treated by medical professionals at the scene. Unfortunately, Chris passed away from his injuries. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.”

Raschke’s Speed Demon team also shared the SCTA statement, writing: “At this time, we ask everyone to please respect Chris’s family, friends, and the Speed Demon team. We are deeply devastated.”

CNN Sports has contacted the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office regarding Raschke’s death.

Speed Demon lays claim to having created the world’s fastest piston-powered car, and the long, bullet-shaped vehicle being driven by Raschke in Bonneville was the third iteration of the streamliner.

At last year’s Speed Week with Raschke as the driver, the Speed Demon team won a 12th Hot Rod Magazine Trophy, posting a winning mile-speed of 446.716 mph and an exit speed of 459.734 mph.

Bonneville, a dry lakebed on the border of Utah and Nevada, has long been an iconic location for land speed records, with Speed Week attracting around 500 hot rods, roadsters and motorcycles each year.

Pete and his partner build some crazy engines.
Pete was a hot rodder and years ago driving thru Texas his throttle cable broke.
He coasted off the side of the freeway and found some barbed wire he made in to a temporary throttle cable.
A Texas trooper stopped to see what was going on.
The cop saw the fix going on and said "I don't even want to know" and drove away.

A few years ago a good friend set a record on his motorcycle.

I was going to fly my little airplane down to be his "crew" but a pile of thunderstorms formed right near Wendover, so I missed his record-setting runs.

He said the weird thing is there is no real sensation of speed when on course. Nothing but featureless salt.
You're staring at the mountains off in the distance, trying to hear the slightest increase in RPMs as you tuck as tightly as possible.
