Leno's law shot down

California legislature killed the bill Leno pushed for classic car smog exemption . Very sad .

Typical of the people running things here. Thing is, they aren't running anything except into the ground. Seriously, the kind of people we have in any form of government are low grade morons. I bet if you asked any of them who the 3rd president of the US was they would not know.

Every single person on the public trough is mentally constipated or they wouldn't be there. It's embarrassing.

Scott Watkins 09-02-2025 01:45 PM

"Typical of the people running things here."

No sir 100% the responsibility of the California voters. If the folks want something different in California, they'd educate themselves and vote accordingly.

There's your fallacy.

Steve Carlton 09-02-2025 02:31 PM

I’m not saying people here vote wisely, but there’s no way this issue was on the agenda when they did. I’d be curious what the reasoning was in turning down this bill, though.

Deschodt 09-02-2025 02:33 PM

not just shot down...They discussed it in private, no public debate, nothing.. they didn't even explain why they shot it down, the one person questioned "could not remember" - tells you how much they care about voters!
Someone mentioned a cost of 1.2Mil, I am sure Cali spends that on 20x complete BS measures elsewhere. Sigh...

Arizona_928 09-02-2025 02:36 PM

I don’t think cal has honest elections as the car culture is very much alive in that state.

Still live there? You can't say it surprises you that they are anti gas engine cars so you pay the price for staying and supporting their agendas.

They want everyone on bicycles or god-awful public transit.

Facts:

https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260SB712

You can review part of the sausage making process there.

And you can read the Bill!!!

1975 and older cars are still exempt, like my 911.

NO SMOG for my 911, as it has been for many years.

Mahler9th 09-02-2025 03:04 PM

The sausage factory chiefs examine the $$ impact of a new recipe before moving forward.

Part of the process:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB0TFTVTb7U

You can see at least part of what Leno had to say in that video.

I should note that I have a 1999 BMW that requires rolling smog, and I have no issues accessing a station that can perform that test.

I think I pay the same amount for that test as I pay for another vehicle (a 2002 model) that requires just a plug in test.

Again, my 1975 911 REMAINS smog exempt.

Mahler9th 09-02-2025 03:10 PM

"(CA)AB 42 exempted vehicles manufactured before 1978 from smog check testing. Also required that vehicles 20 years old or older be exempt from the Smog Check program starting in 2004. AB 42 established a brief rolling chassis exemption until it was repealed in 2006 where 1976 and newer vehicles were subjected to emission testing."

ev…

Zeke 09-02-2025 03:27 PM

@Mahler9th, that's how it went down. There are some real idiots in the legislature that wouldn't know a sports car from a sports coat, or a performance classic from a Cuisinart. Those that aren't in the real idiot group are just following gaining support from others for their own little pork project.

There's not one stand up person in Sacramento. They are all sellouts.

speeder 09-02-2025 03:35 PM

The truth of it is that in the list of challenges that CA. has, some smog exemption bill isn't even on the radar. It simply doesn't matter to anyone but a small subset of the population, which we happen to be a part of. Don't overestimate your own importance...it just doesn't matter.

If I was forced to ride the bus, light rail or a bicycle here and I got a free GT3 if I moved to where you live, I'd stay put.
