I had stopped racing and instructing, then a few years ago, I realized I didn't own them, they owned me..... so I quit cold turkey and sold them all (at the time a spec boxster, 2-964, a 71t & a 72) Owned some cool cars also, like the "Karma Carrera" and a few cup cars. I think I would like a macan, but IMHO there are better values for a small suv. |
Shaun, for me its simple. I have a decent 911 with 150k miles. Might need a motor tomorrow, might need one in 50k, who knows. When the cars were cheapish, you could get a motor done for 10-15k. The appreciation in value has driven the cost of a rebuild much higher, like double that now or more. Plus, if the motor broke previously, it was no biggie. Let the car sit, get to it whenever. Now that it has significant value, that's a less palatable alternative.
Yeah, I shouldn't worry about it and just enjoy the car. But it does creep in the back of your head. I liked it better when it was cheap. |

The 911s have already skyrocketed, not sure they will continue at their recent rate. |
I can make arguments for each "departure":
- BMW: it WILL cost you $$ soon, and this is the era where tail light stays on because a light module is bad and the replacement needs to be encoded with the VIN of the car and the mileage. That kind of $hit awaits you.. - 993: Worth the most, if you have a better place to put the $, I fear the more they go up the less I drive it. So why keep it... Also IMO the 993, inside, is 95% identical to your G series when seating in the driver seat, so if you squint in the 911 you still think you own the 993 ;-) - The G series is now a tractor by modern standards. I genuinely think they are overpriced now for the experience you get. If it ever needs an engine rebuild you're gonna regret not selling it, also slower than the 993. Sell it while the market is nuts. Me, (and I owned those 3 cars +/- 1 model year!!!) in "selling first order" #1 the 3-series, it's a run of a the mill vanilla second gen E46, absolutely nothing there that is not reproducible. #2 G series (overpriced IMO, take the $) #3 993, it's has cost issues but it's so pretty and is a nicer car overall |
I would keep them all and be happy.

I know a lady that drives a real Speedster hard in the hills above the Bay Area. I don't track the value of cars and it plays no role in my keeping or selling. That said, I would sell the 993 as it has this halo of being the last of the air cooled cars.

I have thought about this as well as I have 3 "fun" cars also. I have two Mustangs, a 1966 and 1992. I got the "66 at 17 and am the second owner so it will never go anywhere. I could sell the 1992 and not care, but my daughter wants it so I just put it in the storage for the winter and suspend the insurance.
My Pcar has appreciated pretty crazily since I bought in 2018, but like others have mentioned I have it insured and while the insurance bill is painful, it allows me to drive it. It is a rare color combo which makes it worth more to the right buyer, but not replaceable. It is right in line with what I could buy a nice Speedster for, so there is a little worry, but I am not saving the car for its next owner. For your question, the 993 is the only one you have that I have not owned. I had an '86 cab, a '92 Turbo and a '03 996TT. If you have to sell one I would say the BMW as it would be the easiest to replace. If you are dead set on selling one of the 911's, take them both for a spirited drive back to back and keep which ever one gives you the biggest smile. You will make the most on the 993, but if it was me that is the one I would sell. The body shape just never grew on me. I did think about a 993TT, but as you have said, finding a good air cooled mechanic is getting harder and I think if I get another older one it will be a 1994 3.6 Turbo. Which is just a long way of me saying the 993 is my least favorite air cooled and they are worth a lot now, so I'd cash in on that. Unless its S and has the widebody....... Bill |

I had to have all lower studs done on my car when I got it. Thankfully everything else was in good form. And drive it now as much as I can even with it being an M491. It really loves being driven and I'm happy to oblige. |

A brand new car...given free to those less fortunate....to be crashed within a year...over emotions. There is no public common sense on valuation these days. -Or real value. (hint: it is people and being with those you love in life.) -Or the urge to say "That is wrong and stupid" |

New loaded pickups are approaching $100k from the factory.
Loaded with surveillance electronics. Ne? Double-Digit IQ people on the street see something with sexy curves, built a half decade ago, and ass-ume it equals value. The idea of destroying something beautiful....because it's nearby...should be examined further.. |

I've not had long term 993 experience, but believe its got the 911 attributes with enough modernity to make it less of a toy and more of a "car" without being too far off the mark, so yeah, despite its value it would stay. |

I'm not wealthy and can't afford to maintain a bunch of cars as I move to retire in 3 years. I have an 83 911 that is a great runner but a 6/10 cosmetically now and set up as a track car. I also have 3 914s. Only one is worth anything. It's a nice Bumblebee. With the 356, one of my worries, even with insurance, was getting hit and finding someone who can properly repair it. Sure, insurance may pay for it, but there is no one within several hundred miles of me that could properly repair a 356. I just found myself driving it less and less and it was really the only one of my cars that was ready to go. In my extreme catastrophic thinking moments at 4am, I also see a time when no one wants these things. Have you been to a 356 gathering? I'm 62 and would be considered a young guy in that crowd :-) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1757635830.jpg |
