Pest control companies are forbidden to use rat poison in their traps
 

In CA that is.

I’ve been a Clark Pest Control customer in the SF Bay Area for over 20 years and have been very satisfied with their service until recently. The last two or three years I’ve noticed a heavy increase in rodent activity on my property. I only have one neighbor I share a fence with and we’re surrounded by open fields. Clark used to put poison blocks in their traps but recently CA has forbidden that practice. Now all they can do is put out snap traps. There are no feral cats in the area because coyotes, which are protected here, hunted them down. Anyway, I can buy the poison myself at Home Depot so I don’t know why CA passed that law. I stopped pest control service because of it but it was through no fault of their making.

Does your state have the same law?

Those Home Depot poison are like chocolate to them. I stopped off at Tractor Supply on my way back and bought two large tubs of the real deal when I was at Vegas for a construction show. I have open canyon land and no cats like we used to due to coyotes. I can only do so much, but they seem to be working to a certain extend. Yep, Fking CA with lots of stupid people

Years ago some family friends retired from the Air Force, and bought a family farm in Texas that had been empty for a few years. He expected the place to be over run with mice and rats, but found none. He and his wife both grew up on farms in the area.

His first morning in the place he grabbed his coffee and went to the front porch to enjoy the view of his new place. There was a rattle snake on the porch so he grabbed his pistol and dispatched the snake. The next morning, same thing on a different spot on the porch. When the third morning care around, and yet another rattle snake was dispatched, he called a fellow farmer and asked about a snake control company. They found over 70 rattle snakes under his house.

After they were all rounded up, within a few days the rats and mice arrived in droves. He started missing the rattle snakes, and started looking for a few barn cats to adopt.

I live on 5 acres and nice and rats are common. I had two female garage cats that turned out to be mass murderers. Rodents, birds, lizards… all were executed. The cats got old and finally had to be put down and now I use poison bait from tractor supply. It works but I’m really don’t want to harm the owls that live here so I use it sparingly.

We had a large rat snake come into our backyard. It was obviously very sick. It died in the yard, so it went to the compost pile where I put any biological item we need to dispose of.

It was very obvious it had eaten a rodent that had been poisoned, maybe two of them as he had a bulge in the belly. I don't ever use poison as we have two dachshunds that would love a rodent treat. Both have eaten mice. Great biological disposal.

In Texas you can buy pretty much anything you want. Trick is, don't go to Home Depot or other chain store, go to a feed store.

We use a smallish pest company in CA and we were told they are the only company in NO CA who are "agriculture certified" (I believe that was the term they used) and can still use bait in their traps. Rebaited traps yesterday.

Poisoned mice are also going to poson the good species which eat them.
I'd have to agree with that law.

I have mixed feelings about the *readily available in Idaho* poison bait boxes as it can also take out hawks and owls who feed on the rodents. I do still use it in places along with zap traps inside the garage and RV barn.

LOL! Really, sticky traps are humane. Essentially putting the little buggers in bondage until they die of starvation?

Yeah, that's the problem with poison. You poison the critters who then run off and die and may be eaten by something up the food chain that is then poisoned and dies. I've heard that sort of thing takes out lots of raptors including eagles if they are in your area.

There are several different sorts of bucket traps that catch mice or rats or squirrels and dump them in the bucket. They are pretty cool.
