so there is a newer method of fishing. a technique
I dont know how new the technique is but colored me intrigued. I am a bass fisherman, accustomed to casting lures.
drifting a frozen squid across the tops of reefs is effective, but oddly boring. the method is called Slow Pitch jigging. I think it started in Japan, but blew up in Florida. being me, I researched for a month. what rod to buy? what reel to buy? I called Florida. a guy called Johnny. of Johnny Jigs. cool dude!! closet civil engineering nerd. we talked about the Osaka Airport for a long time, and how it is sinking. I told him I am a CE, and he just started in..fun. I just googled the hell out of that airport. it is crazy!! they built a friggen island on piles!! anyways, Johnny could sell a ketchup sandwich to a woman in a white dress. I bought a rod. I'll be in Japan in a few weeks and will buy the fishing reel there. Johnny thought it was the best move and made sure he gave me his opinion on my reel choices. slow pitch jigging looks strenuous. like cross fit. off a kayak, Johnny said I am going to get whupped. slow pitch rods are engineer marvels as well. I just stepped on my dogs poop, and I am still in a good mood!! happy Friday people. |
ROLFMAO!
It's good to have you back, sir! If you aren't going to describe it, can you post a link to a video so we all have a better idea what you're going to be doing? |

All my bass fishin' (jigging) was off the front of my bass boat, with one foot on the trolling pedal... or at one of my ponds... using lightweght spinners and baitcasting ...
For bank "jigging" into bushes, etc., I wanted a pistol grip baitcaster and stiff 5.5' rod and heavy (for me ... 10-12#) line :(. Not my thingy .... Gimme an ultralite spinner with 6 lb line and a 10 lb bass instead ... and then Get Jiggy with it :) Happy poop day Cliff! |
I keep on hearing about slow pitch on fishing forums and have watched a few videos, but have not dipped my toe into it yet. Very interested to hear what you find out and whether you end up enjoying it!
re "drifting a frozen squid across the tops of reefs is effective, but oddly boring" I hear you, for the fish I target most often (salmon) the most effective technique by far is trolling with your gear on a downrigger system. It works great, but you don't even have the rod in your hands until after you get a fish on... most of your time is spent just driving around and keeping an eye on the rod in the rod holder and hoping that something happens. I have been getting more into "mooching" which is a salmon technique where you have the boat drifting, rod in your hands, and you are moving a whole herring up and down the water column. It is not nearly as effective as trolling but there is just so much more satisfaction in taking a more "active" role in getting the fish on your line. So, I get it! |
Been slow pitch jigging for a couple of years now. And have also talked with the guys at Johnny jigs and purchased three rod and reel setups from them. Plus numerous jigs and assorted tackle.
My buddies were a little skeptical a first. We fish pretty far offshore and haul in some big fish. They took a look at the rods and said no way. Till I started catching fish. I’ve even pulled in a good sized shark, but you still have limits to what you can do. You use the reel to winch the fish in, not the rod. And if a big fish starts running under the boat you can snap the rod. |
I started January 2023. Here are a few fish that I’ve caught. You can see the Johnny jigs pro jigger plus rods and accurate reels that I like. I recently picked up a jyg rod that was less expensive, and does the job.
I generally have 4 or 5 set up and ready to go. That way I can just grab another rod if I want to try a different jig, or if I get bit off or broke off I can get another jig in the water quickly. Sometimes the bite doesn’t last a long time and I don’t want to be trying to re rig on a rocking boat.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1761336146.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1761336146.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1761336146.jpg |
DC. that is the rod I ordered.
very cool. I considered the accurate reels or maybe even Avet, but in the end the free spool of a Shimano was too much to overcome for me. |
Dang dmcummins you are killing it out there!
|
DC..so cool. can you give us the fish species??
a pompano? some grouper? |

I’ve caught all kinds of fish on jigs, some days the jigs are working great, some days bait wins out. It’s a lot easier to clean the boat when everyone is using jigs instead of squid. |

But he won’t buy a jigging rod, he will use one of his heavy rods instead. He likes to horse the fish in. But if you want to catch fish in SWF, he can make it happen. Offshore or inshore. |
When I retire I’ll jump on your friends boat.

And I’m a lot cheaper, chip in for gas, bait, ice, and cookies. |
A bunch of my old time Bay Area guys I grew up with have over the last 10-15 years got on the fly-fishing thing. There are a few that will come stay the night here, leave before I even need to piss in the morning, buy me dinner and go toss some flies at some very fruitful rivers here....
Not sharks but bears & cats are in these here waters.... They all pack for shots in the air 1st. Catch and release is apparently the fly fisherman commitment. They file down the barbs on their flies as to not have to kill their sporting friends. |

DC, I have questions. :D how deep do you all jig down in Florida? I heard the Japanese go down to 900 feet for this one particular species. NUTS!! in CA, am at 200 feet at the deepest from my kayak. that is my mental limit. I'll run a smaller reel. Johnny suggested I up my reel one size just in case I end up and a party boat or something. leaning towards the Ocea Jigger Custom F in the 1500 size. |
I’m on the gulf side, so we have long runs to get to very deep water. We are generally 100’ to 150’. We have to run 30 miles from the pass just to get to 100’, 150 is another 10-15 miles.
I have a friend that started using an electric reel, but I’m not that old yet. We have plans to make some 100 mile runs, but the weather has not been cooperating. We made it 80 miles out one time, but the waves were higher than forecast and we had to run slower than I like. |

we get deep fast. 2 miles out, I think its 200. |
