Very nice responses here from our Pelican family.
Cherish the final days with her Steve for both you and your mom.

2 years layer I catch myself thinking about calling to talk. I wonder if that ever goes away

It does not, nor would I want it to: My Mother, Arden, passed away in 1990 and I still take great solace in her advice and wisdom.

I am sure you feel the same way.

Nothing in life is harder, Byron...if we are lucky enough to become old orphans after our parents passing, and we honored them in our deeds, the pain is less, the landing somehow softer.

Best.

Thank you, everyone.

I’m so glad that I came when I did, last Thu. Mom seemed like her usual self. We chatted and had a nice visit for the first few of days.

Yesterday she was still drinking but didn’t eat anything. I knew that was a sign. Her eating has declined steadily since I arrived. Tue she had a quarter of a piece of toast. She was less articulate and aware and much weaker on Tue too. Today she’s had a few tiny sips of water and has been pretty out of it most of the day. I’m assuming that she’ll be gone in 2-4 days which is actually a blessing. She was concerned that this would drag on and take months. It’s getting harder for me to watch this but I’m smiling, asking if she needs anything, and telling her that I love her. My wife should get here tomorrow as long as the flight cancellations don’t impact her travels. I’m disappointed that my wife won’t really be able to chat with my mom. Mom isn’t really conversational, and there’s no telling how she’ll be by Sat morning.

The good news is that mom isn’t in any pain.

Steve, if thoughts could be felt you would be staggering under the weight of the arms of your Pelican brothers and sisters around your shoulders.
You're doing alright, brother.

It is a sad time of life when our original support team is no longer part of our everyday.
Surrounded by the people who love her. Not a bad way to go.
You will never regret being there for her.
