Like I said on page 4, an M491 is no longer an affordable driver candidate.

The perspectives on air cooled 911s on this forum are pretty funny. Those of us that sold ours back when they were still affordable generally lament the insane appreciation and feel that they are no longer worth the money. Those that still have theirs think they are worth every penny. Human nature is a funny thing.

Well put! All of my cars are worth more to me than I can sell them for.

If I didn't want to open a restaurant next year, I would have bid on this thing and remake my 69E from years ago.

I have a few. I bought them to drive them.
I'll let my surviving children decide what to do
I'll be sitting in a urn on top the mantle if I'm lucky.

Actually, no. I've hung on to mine for the simple reason that were I to sell it and regret it, there's no way I'd purchase another-its a singular experience, but not a 50-60k experience.
And I seriously regret what the appreciation has done to parts and repair costs. I understand that these costs have skyrocketed for everything, but its really painful in the aircooled world.

Agree. Sports cars tend to be at the leading edge of things that people can do without when money gets tight.

That could either be a diamond in the rough or a total money pit. Seems like a lot of unanswered questions in the comments. A 2.7 with unknown history that leaks and smokes is always concerning.

With shop rates approaching $200/hour and parts prices growing far faster than inflation, it is hard for an owner to keep up with a car that is driven frequently. Many cars are turning over more frequently as buyers no longer find the juice worth the squeeze.
Early air-cooled cars are a niche market and it is only the passion of owners that keep it going. I fear this like nearly everything else in life won't last.

I took my 997 out today since it was over 70 degrees and no sand has been put down yet.

It still puts a big smile on my face,

So wherever the market goes I still plan on having one.

and it's white, I don't like white cars either and even parted out a very nice 86 coupe because it was white, and I couldn't get $15K for it. My '73 is very happy with the engine.

I hesitate to qualify it as a sports car, but yesterday my neighbor who is an Audi sales guy told me the Golf Rs at the dealership are now $65K out the door... and selling !
I remember having a "senior moment" 5-6 y ago when they reached $40K... How much for a 4wd GTI ? Now 65 after tax and title. LOL

That makes the 5-6-7y old used Caymans at $50-70K seem cheap, almost.. I wonder if I should not keep my Polestar EV (480hp of teleportation) at lease end instead of paying $$$ for a 5-6 year used last gasp P-car with a stick. I never thought I'd be "that guy" who saw the world change so drastically and kinda got left behind wishing for yesteryear, but it appeared that happened regardless... The sporty/interesting car hobby I enjoyed for 3 decades is kinda out of reach now (oh and if you wanan downgrade, a civic Type R is $55K ;-)

I think the Golf R is a cool car, but not at $65k. But we also live in a world of $100k Suburbans and 1/2 ton trucks. Good reminder why I almost always buy used cars.

Golf R is really cool and capable. Its probs as much fun as the Cayman but has practical attributes. Buddy who could have anything he wants (his toy is a GT3 Touring) has one as a dd and can't say enough good things. But 65k is ridiculous. Base price before you load it up is 48,500.

Not a knock on the Golf R on my part, a knock on 65K... Well, small knock: DSG only.. Like all VW products. Never imagined growing up that I'd live thru the end of manuals (and a force switch to EVs). "May you live in interesting times" eh ?
