I have religiously emptied the tank on my snowblower and ran it dry at the end of every season and have had zero problems.
I will add that I use non-ethanol fuel and because it is a smallish paddle type snowblower, I can tip it on its side and pour the gas back in the can and then run it dry. On a big blower, you could probably try and predict the amount of fuel needed on the last few snows so there isn’t much in there and then run it dry. |
In the 20 some years that I've had mine...it's always started up good on the first start of the season.
It has electric start and I just plug it in for the first start and it spins the motor a lot faster than I can pull start it. After the first start, I use the pull cord for the rest of the season. I will start using rec-gas from now on. . |

I didnt read everything but you said its a tecumseh if it has a thumb screw on the float bowl you can usually tickle it turn it in and out a 1/4 turn or so and see if it improves. Out gives more fuel. If that doesnt work or if it has none then you can tip it up on the front remove the bowl and clean it out. You dont need to remove the carb.
|
^^^ I was looking today at the underside of the Tecumseh for a place to add a shut-off valve.
There is a thumb screw...I noticed a spring atop a screw on the side of the bowl. I'll try that. Thanks. I added the Techron and with the True-Fuel it was running very good. The only time it was surging was at wot. I needed to get to my tool shed across the yard with my JD tractor (100 ft)....so I used the snowblower to make a path across the yard about 6ft wide. It did the job, just like new. |

If a couple tank fulls don't change, I'll try Redline...I've heard others mention that too. If neither clears it up....this procedure has a few videos. Looks easy. (same engine as mine) <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GT0STIPg4I8?si=I8x3A-cg-4JuGY5U" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
That is the idle jet on the older carbs they are adjustable
|
^^^ In the video (post 50) he shows it as just tightened in....not adjustable.
But he does show it clean when he takes it out...and then later mentions that he cleaned it and then put it back in for the video. |
