Congratulations! Looks like fun. Please do keep us updated on your progress.

I also looked longingly at that hut as a place to do the work. An empty canvas. Plenty of room for some rolling and stationary tables and workbenches, racks and bins for storage, tool cabinets, a rotisserie if that's in the budget, etc etc. All the things a restoration needs.

Lights, power, airlines everywhere, a nice stereo, maybe even a flatscreen, cuppla old couches. Turn this whole endeavor into a YouTube channel called Project Redcoat.

Looks great!

We had a TR4 IRS when my dad was stationed in Hawaii.

Congrats on getting it home.

About 35 years ago (I think), I saw a mint condition TR4 at an auto consignment store. It was $4,999 which I thought was ridiculous - I would never pay more than $4k for a car. Me dumb!

That is nicer than I expected, especially inside

What’s the game plan? Mechanicals first or body?

I want to get it running so that it can be moved around easier, but will probably clean up the inside first so I can assess what the floors look like.
To clarify, I want to clean things first to see what I am working with exactly, then get it running. Someone posted that it had a nice patina so, I'm not all that concerned with how she looks right now. I think it would be cool as all get out to be able to drive the car around as it looks, old British car with a well used look, but needs to be safe. Safety first!!!

One thing that concerns me is that the clutch pedal is not moving at all but the shifter moves through the shift pattern. When we got it on the trailer, I shifted it into 1st gear but when we moved it off the trailer, I actually forgot it was supposedly in gear. I guess it really wasn't in gear because it rolled freely. Anyway, I will have to figure it all out as to why it wouldn't have stayed in gear.

Congrats Marty. It’s a rare thing to reignite an old friendship like this. Very cool. I’m sure everyone on this thread is doing what I am…thinking back on all the cars we’ve owned and what we wouldn’t give to get some of them back. You’ve done it. Kudos.

Yeah, driving it around safely would be good, before you spif it up.

Interesting about the shifting/clutch/tranny. I would think that if the shifter wasn't doing anything, that you'd feel that. The shifting action wouldn't feel like you were putting the trans in any gear. But moving while the car is in gear and the clutch pedal not moving is weird. My first thought which doesn't make a ton of sense is that the clutch is somehow stuck disengaged (you'd think the pressure plate wouldn't allow it to "fail open"). That would enable you to "shift gears" such that it feels normal, but the car could still be rolled around.

I'm curious to hear what this first issue ends up being.

Me as well. I figure there are a whole lot more people on here that know way more than I do. This is actually the only vehicle I have ever had that has a manual transmission. I remember having the slave cylinder replaced back in or around 1985, lol. I was thinking it could be that the clutch is stuck open also, maybe from sitting idle for 27 years, or maybe the hydraulic slave cylinder is dry? I will spend some time this weekend and tinker.

Normally, the pressure plate fights against the clutch to be closed, so that's the weird thing about it. The normal failure mode is that you can't disengage the clutch. So this really is the opposite of the normal failure. That's what's got me scratching my head. The only thing that occurs is that the last time someone pressed the clutch in, maybe the TO bearing hung up on the input shaft. I don't know, but I'm sure someone will either have an answer, or you'll figure it out and tell us.

Hobie, you might check the pedal assembly, too. I had my share of issues with the pedal assembly on my TR250; the sleeve bushing might be frozen to the shaft.

(Be forewarned, it's a nightmare to get into the footwell to get this thing out!)

edit, photo is lifted from a current ebay auction.
