My neighbor had a Crosstrek with a CVT that died at 30k...

Only Subaru rebuilds them... no one else seems to touch them...

Is that vintage Subaru clear of head and pan gasket leak? I would think it was cleared up by then. I encountered it in 2004 and 2007.

But good suggestions on here

(I was looking at the VW Golf and the Mazda 3 at the time) Ended up finding a good deal on a VW Golf (2015 was MT Car of the year)
We've had eight VW Golfs thru the years ( Rabbit, Golf, GTI) - most driven to 200K. They are wonderful cars - hatcbhback ( tons of space), simple to do maint., fast ( enough), cheap to operate - hard to miss. I have an 2018 Golf and 2024 Atlas in the drive - no complaints!

Just stay away from sunroof cars... A few friends have ended up in litigation...

My son has a 2015 VW Jetta. Still a cheaply made car but seems to have better ergonomics than the Japanese cars. Reliable enough and pretty easy to work on.

Issues with VW sunroofs? I've not had any issues with leaks or other issues and have never received a VW issued recall notice. It's a good, solid, well made car - but it's not a Mercedes.

Cheers!

The small sunroof is not a problem. Some owners who have the big panoramic sunroof have problems with improper sealing. Having said that, good friends have a first generation Tiguan with the big sunroof and have had zero problems. That car hauled a small camper both ways across the continent and has made more trips through the Rockies than I care to count.

Porsche has also had a lot of panoramic sunroof issues. My buddy has an older Cayenne GTS that has had a lot of water intrusion issues. The cowl drains are also problematic. His lives outside. If they have been garage kept, I think they fair much better.

We’ve had a lot of VWs - at least 20 - over the years so they all blend together. Three had blocked sunroof drain issues. A Jetta, a Tiguan and sonething else. The Tiguan flooded so bad they had to replace a bunch of the interior, but that was a covid car.

Thanks again. I will look into the Subi Noah mentioned to my kid. he has to like it and a newer car like that maybe over what I am willing to spend on his first car.

Oh yeah, i forgotten about those auctions. Problem with those are that they are banged up and much worked is needed to get them road worthy.
