Misnomer
Living in the PNW, we have a lot of fir trees. Millions upon millions I would guess. And fir trees have needles. People commonly call these "pine needles," which they clearly are not.
We also have pine trees so it isn't from lack of exposure to seeing the difference. What sort of misnomer do you experience? |
"Gone for good ". Usually when some favorite restaurant or store is closing, you will hear that line. No.
|
When some declares: "I'm done with this place. You will never see me again!"
If only they would keep their promise... or "If X person gets elected, I'm moving to Canada." but we still can't get rid of them. |
I went to a round table meeting at work once and brought up the dirty air filters in our prime inspection booth in the paint shop I worked in at the time, and how they needed to be changed out more frequently. An engineer pointed out to me that it was a "misnomer" that a dirty air filter didn't work as well as a clean air filter, when in fact, a dirty filter would screen smaller dust microns than a clean filter. I was like, I just want the air to be moved in and out of the booth so that the people in the booth can breathe easier and the air stays cooler, thereby helping people perform the task at hand more comfortably, which leads to better efficiency. The filters got changed that day!!!

If you don't have locking diffs, your "4X4" is actually just a "2X4" - but no one says that!

My 2011 Honda CRV says 4WD on the rear liftgate but it's AWD. They changed the emblem to AWD in the 2012 year although a slightly different platform. French fries are probably the easiest go-to misnomer. |

Google search:
noun: misnomer; plural noun: misnomers a wrong or inaccurate name or designation. "morning sickness is a misnomer for many women, since the nausea can occur any time during the day" a wrong or inaccurate use of a name or term. "to call this “neighborhood policing” would be a misnomer" So if you live where they call all soda pop "Coke" and you ask for an Orange Crush Coke or orange coke is that a misnomer? |
^^^Seahawk. Nailed it.
When I lived in Boulder, CO, people there always spoke of living in "The West." I asked them if they were West, where was Oregon. They always had a confused look after that. |
