Get there early. Half or more of the lumber at the big box stores is crap. It’ll be a waste of time if you wait until the pile has been picked over.

It depends on how many you need, I guess, and what your time is worth, and your willingness to sort through farmer's loads of junk wood to find something decent while you're shoulder to shoulder with a lot of people of various temperaments attempting the same trick.

Jeez, I'm old. In my mind, a stick of 2x4 from the big box should be a buck 88.

The $3.75 price is about what I paid at HD about 2 weeks ago for "premuim" 2x4's. They call them premium - I wouldn't agree - as I had to pick through about 20 to find 8 that were worthwhile. Then once I start going through them for my projects I find one with that has exposed bark on one corner for about half it's length. :( That one will be going back.

Wane is considered acceptable in framing lumber. You can take it back and get your 4 bucks, but is it worth the gas and time? If you picked it, as your post suggests, isn't it on you?

I agree that seeking to buy lumber at a box store will yield utility grade for the most part. Sure, they sell it cheaper than most yards, but is it really cheaper in the long run?

They get what they pay for and so do you.

I should have made it clearer when I posted, but I'm not looking to buy any lumber.
Just trying to get an idea of how busy it would be. The lumber and contractor desks are shared by the on-line pickup area....in the back of the store. I had three things I had ordered to pickup and the roads are not good here. 30 mile drive...I just got back.
(of course I had to stop for lunch and a beer)

Luckily, the Menards store wasn't too busy. It only took about 15 minutes to get my items.

Here's one of the online items I picked up.....it works great.:)

Okay Steve,

Now you don’t have an excuse not to take my calls!

stevej37 01-17-2026 02:52 PM

^^^ For $6..I am surprised at the sound quality...it's very good. They should include a black vinyl bag for it....I had a bag phone for a couple years at work.

Someone else is getting it about 11 months from now. :D
