DIY spray bedliner thoughts ? For a bumper
I have decided to change the look of my 2001 GMC 4x4 dually . I ordered a bumper that is modular and unfinished steel . It comes as a center section and two wings . The idea is you bolt the pieces on , make any tweeks if needed then remove and apply final finish .
The look I am after is spray on bedliner . There are several over the counter brands of spray cans and schutz gun type . Any recommendations from the brain trust ? Or should I have it done at a body shop or truck place that does bedliner ? I have watched videos and I think Herculiner in spray cans looks good . Raptor liner which uses a schutz gun looks better . One thing I am confused about is any primer needed over clean sanded steel ? Any advice appreciated .

I bought some two part schutz gun gravel guard for the bottom 10 inches of a 2004 Tacoma that is extremely strong. I'm at home now but I can find out what I bought in the morning plus I have the Tacoma on my lift so I can shoot pics of how it came out. It's been on there for 26 months. Nov of 2023.
Given it's two part I did not seal it and I sprayed BC/CC over it. The Gravitex and Wurth stuff is not two part. I know nothing about bed liner. Found some pics on my phone. I'll find the product name tomorrow. ![]()

Richard, bedliner on a bumper sounds hideous. Sorry. However. I can see masking it off and doing parts. What parts I can't say. AFA primer doesn't the product website say? I would prefer some protection. Whatever you do on the backside should be OK for under the bedliner.
Now if I were doing part with bedliner and partly just painted, I suppose semi black would be in order. To really go for it in your climate, I might look into having the whole thing galvy dipped. That would take care of the inside (backside) quite well. I saw some split paint and textured bumpers on Images and some looked great. Broken up with trim and accessories like a skid plate really stood out. Never seen anything like that around here. Yet. |

Bob Kontak thanks for the pics , that is aprox the finish I am looking for .
Milt the rear bumper I purchased came finished and it is a bedliner type texture but has a sheen to it . I think I will swing by the body shop I have used in the past and see what he can do . |

You going body color over top or just spray?
My Rumf has lizardskin on the floor, inner fenders and a few other spots, but it’s body color. Similar texture, different purpose. It’s not pretty. If I were doing something liner color for a truck I’d powdercoat. If I was set on liner I’d go to someone that sprays it for a living and have recourse if it doesn’t stick right. GL - ymmv. |

I used rustoleum spray bedliner cans from Home Depot on rock rails for the Jeep TJ I had a few years back. Very durable, great looking finish. Didn't keep the jeep long enough to see how long it would take to fade but even if it did the cans are so cheap it's no big deal.

I replaced the rear bumper on my Dodge truck with a new bumper that arrived painted black; I wanted a more durable finish. I wiped that with acetone and hit it with an entire can of Rustoleum bed liner and then let it dry in the hot sun. It's got a bit of a fine texture. It's been very durable and looks good. It's taken some good hits/scuffs and the surface hasn't been broken.

I want the bumper to be black . That will match my black step rails and new black rear bumper . I haven't installed the new rear bumper yet , I think I will take it to my body shop guy and see if he can match the color/texture .
One thing I just remembered is the weather . I can't spray outside due to the cold weather . My shop is heated but not really setup for spraying . I could make a temporary setup for this one project . |

!I was thinkin' about a total strip & powder coating my ancient (old & tired ... but still needed) F150 because I'm virtually parking it, and it's white... and I want a camo truck that I can spot in a parking lot ... and I have become a racist ... don't like whitey no mo' .And the chrome bumpers, etc. have ALWAYS annoyed me... I might splurge on rattlecans now .…Or just call Bob

This is the bumper I purchased . My truck being white is the reason I want the bumper black for some contrast . I am going to paint my current faux chrome radiator grille white , that should pop against the black . All of these " off road " style bumpers generally have a textured finish . I don't want a shiny black paint finish .

Having given this idea a LOT more traction ...
Should I wash my dirty, white truck this morning and remove the really nice tool box and plastic bedliner ... before spraying it in 20 degree temps later today? Or just mask off the windows... ![]() Decisions.... |

This stuff is like a matte black. No texture. Not two part.

I went to the body shop this morning with my new rear bumper . He thinks he can match that finish but took some pics to get with his paint supplier to be sure . I showed him pics of the front bumper I have coming , we are on the same page.
So after I fit the new bumper I will bring it to him and he does his thing . He said some special primer will go on the bare metal inside and out . Then another type of primer over that and then the final finish . He gave me a quote and I am definitely going to have him do the work . He has painted Porsche parts in the past for me and always happy with the results . My new bumper is due 1/29 so hopefully sometime in February she will be done . |

Plot twist
, I called the bumper vendor to check on their in house final finish services . They do a textured powder coat for $220.00 . That is much lower than local body shop quoted so I am having the vendor apply the finish . Done deal no headaches . They do this for a living so I am confident I will be happy with the results . Thanks guys
