The style is just off the charts...GM had it going on in the early '60s.

Always liked those early Rivieras. A guy shows up regularly at the local C&C with his customized version. It's interesting, but IMHO, no real improvement over the original...

Bill Mitchell liked the hidden headlights, too, and the Riviera was originally designed with them, but the GM beancounters held back until the sales of the car 'justified' the cost.

Designed in the era when only design mattered. No with all the headlight height restrictions, pedestrian safety restrictions, and occupant safety, most cars look the same, ugly.

I liked the boat tail model.

There's a bright red boat tail I used to see regularly. It was lowered a little, and wore fully polished torque-thrust wheels. Very, very nice looking ride. I may have posted it in car papparazi

I had read that they had mechanical issues with them until '65, when they finally worked out the bugs and put them in production. They were definitely part of the original design and of course the *one year only* 1965 is the Holy Grail but the '64 is a close second with the revised interior over the '63 and was the only year of the three with the 425 "nail head" engine standard.

A friend picked up an original late 60's Riv in California and brought it up here to Oregon. This thing is bone stock and pretty cool. Sorry, I don't have pictures...

One of my friend's dad had a new Riviera. Jim, my buddy got to drive it often. Some of the other kids were doing burnouts so my buddy did several. Then he looked at the rear tires and the steel belts were showing in places. He had destroyed the rear tires.

He drove home very carefully after stopping at the car wash to get rid of the rubber on the back of the car. He parked it where his dad left it.

The next day near dinner time his dad came to Jim's room and closed the door. Jim starting sweating bullets, and he dad said he noticed the rear tire wear on his car has been extreme and he had to buy new rear tires. Then he smirked, I guess I did too many burnouts, but please don't get the tires to the belts again.

Jim realized he was not in any real trouble and his dad was cooler than he thought. His dad was fairly wealthy.

My Dark Half would drive a Riviera, but probably a 71-73......

Had a nice 64 I drove to work for a year or two. The AC was stuck on ICE cold and the gearing was like a 4.10 with the low revving big torque engine.
I would still cruise it now, very comfortable freeway car. Still it turned and stopped like all the other 60/70s cars.

Would you have "high toned son of a *****" lettered on the trunk lip?
