Mickey Lolich - 1968 Tigers
Heartbreaking. The hero of the 68 series and of this 9 year-old boy in Detroit.

Breaks my heart.
I remember watching the games in class in California...teacher was a huge baseball fan. Brock, McClain, Cepeda, Horton, Gibson, Cash and my favorite, Bill Freehan the catcher. RIP Mickey.

I was 11 at the time (68) and listened to all the games on the radio. Knew the names of every player on the team. RIP.

Buncha geezers ... except Tim! I was only 8 ... became a Mets/Seaver fan in '69 WS on TV ... and became a baseball nut for many years.
I missed out on 60s baseball really ![]() But I read about them ... and him ... RIP Mickey... Last edited by KFC911; 02-05-2026 at 04:44 AM.. |

I was lucky to have seen him pitch a year or two after the World Series in Tiger Stadium. I'm glad he had a long life.
May he rest in peace. 1968 world series: Mickey Lolich 3 wins - 0 losses Hit one (and only ever) home run. Last pitcher to win three pitched complete games in a World series. Bob Gibson 2 wins - 1 loss. Hit one home run. Denny McLain 1 win - 2 losses

Lolich had to take cortisone shots before his last two outings in the Series. (has there ever been another pitcher to pitch 3 complete winning games in a World Series?)
Denny Mclain is one of the few yet alive from that team...he's 81 I was with my Dad and Grandpa at Tiger Stadium for Denny's 30th win. He went on to win 31 for the season.

No. I think it was Wiki but I read that this morning. What a feat. Regarding cortisone, he only had two days between game five and game seven and you know he was throwing hard. His style was traditional but he must have been so hard to hit. Below is game 5, top of the ninth highlights. He strikes out (end of career) Roger Maris at 12 to 13 minutes in.

I was a happy 8 year old for sure, and when the Tigers won the series dad took us for a cruise in the station wagon up Vernor avenue, the city was alive, everyone cheering and horns honking. Someone painted tiger stripes on their car, and I remembered that later in life. In 1983 I painted tiger stripes on my orange short box Ford van, it was in prime shape for the roar of 84. I got to meet and shake hands with Denny McLain around 2000, he has huge hands. |

Half or more of the men in the grandstand are wearing suits and ties. Thought I would hear Ernie Harwell along with George Kell...then I remembered he only did the radio announcing. I remember hurrying home from school for the series games. No night games then...all afternoon games. .
