Should I got to the butt doc again?
I have an appointment with my urologist this Friday. I expect it to go as it always goes - pee in the cup, bend over and offer yourself to a most humiliating violation of your person, come back next year.
I admit, my new urologist is cute, but even a cute girl looks sketchy when she comes at you while snapping on the rubber gloves (not judging you guys who are into rubber gloves). I’m thinking of passing on this one. I’m almost 76, my prostate gland has been probed, MRI’d, and sampled many times. If it goes haywire at this point in my life, do I need to know about it? Something is going to get me, and relatively soon. Dylan Thomas wasn’t old.

I guess if you are having your PSA tests done and have had the, ah, other examination done the other year you could skip this year. I think I have the "manual" examination done every two or three years.

The PSA test is being discarded more and more.
As I understand it , many things may cause higher numbers.(false positives) My opinion and most docs will lean toward the "not getting too excited about prostate problems this late in the game." Not that life is a game, but in this system of things, other problems will be more serious than a bad prostate.

76 isn't old... You could have 20+ more years.
So keep getting checked.

False positive PSA tests are not a problem. If the test is positive false or not, further evaluation is indicated. It’s false negatives that are a problem which the PSA is not known for.

“Further investigation” is generally an unpleasant endeavor. Especially if unnecessary.
My BIL had a routine calcium scoring CT done and was rushed into the Cath Lab with badly clogged plumbing. After anesthesia, a trocar and wiring weaved up his femoral artery, all clear. False alarm. Heal up and go home. This applies to too much of medicine for an advanced, 2026 society. But never fear, substantial money changed hands.

Last year I went to my gp and got bloodwork done. Am approaching 80. PSA showed really low and I asked my doctor to do a rectal examination. He said it is not necessary anymore if the psa is low. I asked him to do it anyway. Even though I have an enlarged prostate he said it felt normal. So from now on will decline the rectal exam unless the psa increases enough to justify it.
The same with the colonoscopy. If they find something I am going to live with it. Cheers, Guy |

My former doctor has hands the size of Andre the Giant, or so it felt. He retired, and I found a new doctor that has relied on overall health and blood tests and a recent colonoscopy report. The gastroenterologist said everything is fine, see ya in 10 years.

I think a reciprocal exam is the only fair way to make things seem fair. Couldn't hurt to ask.

For some reason my wife has ZERO sympathy about my prostate exams as she "gets" to go to the gynecologist for exams, and then get a mammogram.
I really can't complain compared to what women go through all their life.

I would have that discussion with the urologist , it's a data point to consider once she gives her opinion . In 2015 my prostate cancer was found via rising PSA tests and the rectal exam . Successful treatment followed and I am here today .
In my uneducated opinion you may be close to the line that says you will die WITH prostate cancer vs FROM it . If you get it at all . Again conversation with doctors will help you make that choice . Good luck with whatever decision you make .

I've gotten high PSA numbers for 25 years, and I've had my ass violated every damn year.
I've had biopsies done 3 times (the story about the latest one is here: https://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1076578-its-been-rough-couple-months-long-post.html ) I'm sick of it. I'm taking Finasteride now, so I don't have any symptoms. I'm going to die of something sometime in the next few years, it may as well be this.

What was the old, "bend over and cough" test? To see if your nuts were still connected to the main wiring harness?

My former doctor was a good looking woman. When she probed me I mentioned it was a very uncompromising position. She said welcome to a woman's world and you should be thankful I'm a woman because my fingers are small. She moved and now I have a male doc. That's it for the butt probes for me
