What online news source do you read?
And how much does it cost? I ask because I've been reading the LA Times for years and I get it for a buck a week. I'm tired of the Times. I see other papers that have a lot more varied articles of general interest, not just hard news. I don't mind a little entertainment and I'm not talking about the "Entertainment" section in the Times that I seldom read.
I think my main complaint about the Times is their relentless hard on for bashing the City of L.A. There's never good news. That and they don't like motorsports whatsoever. Back in Shav Glick's day (you have to be old), they ran a column every week plus covered many races (well, he did). Then they lost Dan Neil to the WSJ. Hell, I'll even look at some trivia now and then. One local rag does that but they are NOT worth what they want for a subscription. A real class C operation. Read the WSJ for awhile and liked it, but it's a read, for sure. Not sure I want to work that hard. IDK. What say you?

I use CSM too. My only comment, not a criticism, is they don’t have the large field of reporters so you don’t get the hourly updates with late breaking news. In a way, it’s actually comforting that they provide the updates once they actually know what’s happening, not pages of conjecture. |

I'm of course aware of CSM and I can peruse through a lot of papers at the library. For complete and accurate (I think) summation and wrap up, there is always Time mag which I got for awhile on a deal. I'll read those at the doctor's office but they don't show up anymore. Every 2 weeks doesn't cut it, really.
Straight up world news it's hard to beat the BBC on PBS. I'm just not a TV person. And I do read the comics. It's gotten to where I skip over several in the LA Times. I like apolitical, non confrontational ones, but a lot of those are lame/stale.That C rated rag I mentioned has way better comics than the Times.

I use the Flipboard app. It links to many news websites and has a reader view button if it's a paywall.

We read the WSJ print. I gotta have something I can turn pages and select what's interesting. Morning coffee. Get my head out of the sleep fog.
I am a life long conservative so believe it or not, we get the NYT's print on the weekends. Other that that, internet is CNN, Fox, Daily Caller and Brietbart. Just a heads up. no matter your political affiliation, don't get on "X."

I used to read the newspaper, from about the age of 12 until about 15 years ago. Before I delivered the papers on my bicycle, I used to sit in the wooden box the newspapers were delivered in, and read it front to back. It’s amazing how small the newspaper is compared to the old days.
I’m looking for other online sources, but for now it’s Fox and CNN. It’s like reading, two parallel universes, the way they report on the news. I’ll have to take a note of what everybody here is greeting. Last edited by A930Rocket; 03-09-2026 at 06:29 PM.. |

For US based news services: Reuters, The Associated Press.
You have to be very careful with "X". It's great for quick reports/info but there's a lot of BS on that site. (Why didn't Elon start his own company instead of buying Twitter if he was going to change the name to "X"? )Evey day world news: I still use the BBC but it's not as reliable as it used to be. Local news: Any one of the commercial news services but again you have to be careful. Aljazeera, The Times of Israel are heavily biased IMO. I wouldn't bother with either.

The Guardian. You can look at any of their editions from around the world
They are also reader funded so they don't have to answer to corporate greed. |

I’ve read the news every day since then and attended journalism school at University of Minnesota. Never pursued a career, which I regret. Today, I pay for LA Times, NYT and Washington Post. I get short videos from CNN and other broadcast networks on social media everyday. I listen to NPR and a local news station, (KNX), in the car. I listen to NYT podcasts and other news articles as well. I get breaking news alerts from NYT on my locked phone screen. The NYT is very up to the minute and saves me from reading every article on other platforms unless I’m really hunting for any missed details or updates. I know that people have opinions about news sources but I would just say to seek outlets that do original reporting, (as opposed to aggregates), and try to dig deep and present multiple viewpoints where applicable. |

I read the WSJ on line, along with the NY Post (for some reason there is no pay wall). Dropped the Charlotte Observer (it became a completely unreadable rag after the latest makeover). I also take a peek at the Buffalo News for Bills headlines (their pay wall is tough).

I have not gotten home delivered newspapers in probably 20 years. The internet and cable has made printed news obsolete.
I check Fox news and Newsmax online often during the day while at work for national and world news. Just for giggles I occasionally check CNN and NBC online. I also listen to NPR on the drive to and from work for even more amusement. While the the news has always been a bit biased, I am amazed at how bad it is in recent years. For many years NPR while biased would have several interesting real news stories mixed in. Not so much any more. No wonder half the population feels the way they do.

fox, bbc, podcasts. NPR lost me pretty much for good when they were talking with some guy about being pregnant or something to that effect. Used to enjoy their profiles and human interest stories.
fox has gotten to be just formulaic garbage clickbait nonsense. BBC sometimes talks about stories you don't otherwise see here in the US. Good for some perspective. Paywall now though. Mostly I look for good interviews on podcasts. Still have to pick through garbage and watch out for bias though. Tucker is a moron but has some incredible guests but is also now officially an islam marketer. All In.....I was a HUGE fan for a few years there....still relevant and still some of the best takes on things but now that Sacks is in the WH his contributions have become agenda driven. If you see AI and tech advances as being THE story of current times I think All In is the best window into what is happening at the Fed level on this.

I use the Apple news aggregator on my iPad. It offers a variety of news sources, including Fox and sometimes Newsmax, but it's curated by Apple, so likely biased. I also have Reuters, AP, and BBC apps on the iPad when I really want to know what's going on. I listen to NPR a lot. The local station has 1A, Here and Now, Today Explained in the afternoon - all very informative, with a wide variety of subjects.
There is no news worth watching on TV. Fox it total crap. If you watched CNN you would think only 2 or three things ever happen in a given day, and they repeat their stories about them ad nauseam.

The New Yorker podcast is great! Weird theme music though.
