No worries....before long all restaurants will use the electronic payment terminal.

Roger that, Matt.

I had lunch with an old friend a few years ago.

Mexican place and the total tab for both of us only came to $20. I gave the waitress $20 for a tip and my friend really flipped out. Not really surprising given his personality but for some reason I found his attitude to be distasteful. And we go back to the 70's, so that really hurt.

$20...really? And he's much wealthier than I.....

This is common in China. On the trip before last, around 2019, when no one would let Mrs. Lee or me pay for anything for the whole trip, Mrs. Lee told me that tonight's dinner would be on me and I'd need to go the ATM and get some cash. I got the equivalent of $300. Dinner was a grand feast, private dining room, "more everything!" Sure enough, one of her cousins, while coming back from a smoke break paid it all before we even got the bill. I just finally got to spend that cash on my last trip to China a few months ago.

I know. I work with a bunch and they are all like this. It’s almost like a contest.

This one guy just takes it to extremes. Great guy - been a friend for 30 years - but makes paying for lunch an Olympic sport…

I put myself through college putting up with crap patrons at various restaurants. that instilled in me an almost unnatural politeness to all servers. and I will tip. if I get crap service, I tell the manager. but I usually still tip. I'll even go so far as to give the tip to the manager to give the server. percentage varies.

its too easy to punch down...paying customer vs server. there are better ways to send a message.

I have never had full blown AWFUL service in my life. well, in Lubbock TX. and that was because I was Chinese. hahaha.. the B, didnt even give me a menu..but she gave them to the white folks I was eating with. I got up to leave, my friends came with me..and I decided to NOT go to college at that school.

I would have tipped, but that’s just me. By the OP’s admission, food, atmosphere and service will all good “until the check arrived”. Not to sound snarky, but is it really a big deal for a group of grown men to figure out the finances after the fact?? I would have shrugged my shoulders and move on, IMO. Life is too short to complain about small potatoes stuff like this….

I bet everyone here has had the same kinds of jobs during their career path so we fully understand the concept of tipping and how it fits into things.

I never had a job where tipping was expected. The closest I came was working in a hardware store when I was in High School.
I tend to tip above 20% if the service is decent. I feel sorry for servers, it doesn't look like a fun job, and I've seen women servers treated badly and overheard some really nasty things being said to others. They deserve a good tip for putting up with humanity.

if I am with good friends..we just divide the check by the number of people. is this fair? nope, not if I am with this one boozer of a friend. hahah.. he is a good dood tho. he knows he drank more than the rest of us and will usually pay the tip.

my work crew, we have great memories. sometimes I eat the lions share, sometimes it is someone else. I dont sweat the small stuff anymore.

one time, I did this with "Karen"..name changed to protect..

she collected the money, pocketed our collective tip. I noted it, walked back and asked the wait-staff. "were you stiff with the tip?". she nodded. and I handed her the cash. this was my wifes' friend. I never said a thing, but I told my wife. havent seen her since.

I never liked her. she made up her own nickname!! SKY. Never trust a person that makes up their own nickname. nicknames are assigned.. hahahha. sky..hahah

Life is too short to hang out with Sky.:D Few things worse than hanging out with a cheapskate.
