Biometric kill switches?
When I read of car kill switches before, I thought they'd be a unit that would allow cops or other officialdom to kill a car. No idea it was supposed to be biometric...The car reading your biometrics and deciding you're enabled? mandated in 2027 cars? Talk about unintended consequences!
No skin of my nose because at our ages & medical problems, it's likely Cindy & I are done buying cars. Even if so, it'll NOT be one with a biometric kill switch. An 18 minute video...difficult for me to embed...worth the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftYLPD_7k0Q&t=80s |
Yep, have a beer and your car won't start. A lot of people are going to be pissed.

(Oh, that's the Brit version.) |
More than that...watch the video. Club track days? Forget about those...Imagine your eyes, (pupil dia. and movement read by the car) breathing rate, ect...whoops. But no worry there, since track days are only done by folks with high performance cars and we don't like those, do we? Emergency driving...rushing to a hospital...whoops, bad biometrics there...sorry, shut down. Fleeing from a road rager with a gun? Whoops..bad biometrics..shut down.
Mandated by Congress for all 2027 cars.... |
I suspect this'll be extremely unpopular and get recinded. Unfortunately it'll take a long, long, time as politicians will cry, "but think of the children! One life lost is too many!"

Of course, nowhere in the consideration for a safer environment for car travel does anyone in power ever think about the benefits of educating people on how to use these behemoths, or consider for even a nanosecond that there might be those among us who should never, under any circumstances, be allowed to operate a device as potentially deadly as a car.
Pad it up with airbags, pour the infotainment into our brains, settle all of us into massive, stressful, slow -moving parking lots twice a day in order to pay for them. |
Somewhat related, I absolutely DESPISE all of the weird safety buzzers, bells, chimes, and lane assist type stuff in new cars. This crap scares / startles me and makes me a much worse driver.
I like my analog car, thank you. |

In a bit of good news, the House voted today to amend this bill to remove the kill switch provision. Even bipartisan so at least we can all agree this was a terrible idea!

When I read the thread title I was thinking it was along the lines of an evil plan by the govt to eliminate anyone at any time a la the movie Kingsman: Secret Service

2024 F150. Passing through an intersection and a car coming in from the side strèet crept into my lane. Crash avoidance alarm nearly made me crash.
warn a guy about the alarm... geez. |

I always wonder HOW in the world do the mfrs even prepare for this kind of thing in the design and in the factory and then (thankfully) get it rug pulled?
Or is the hardware/software already 80% installed in our current cars and they would just click it on if some ridiculous government mandate did indeed pass? what a nightmare |
Most modern cars with automated driving systems have sensors that monitor your eye movement and engagement with the steering wheel. I assume it would be those sensors plus some stuff to implement this draconian capability.

The frightening part is that so many in our congress and bureaucracy have USSR Polit bureau thinking.

Same people who redesigned the gas cans. So to make the cans work we need to buy chinese spouts to defeat the american mandated ones.
Maybe the chinese can save us again with an OBD port defeat for the biometrics |
