Psycho boss
Has anyone had to deal with a boss that either has a borderline personality or is a narcissist? He can seem like a very nice charming person. But, there’s the other side.
I seen narcissist and bipolar. Definitely not a bipolar. Luckily, I’m getting transferred to another job. Not because I’ve complained. The other guys that I work with they’re going to have to put up with him for a while. From what I’ve learned, you should have zero tolerance for the **** when you’re around them. Unfortunately, my paycheck depends on me being a nice guy. By the way, he not only has a mental disorder, he’s also a moron. Last edited by gduke2010; 06-12-2026 at 04:44 PM.. |

I had a boss once who seemed to be incredibly negative about suggestions. I didn't understand him until one day he called me to chew me out over my failure to deliver on one of the projects he had assigned. After he hung up, I started thinking about the pile of work he had assigned and was angry enough to call him back and point out he had assigned more than I could be expected to handle. To my surprise, he laughed and told me the next time I felt he was making unreasonable demands, I should let him know.
After that I got to know him much better and came to realize he was insecure. His negativity was his way of giving himself time to make up his mind. He lasted another year or so in that management position then got shuffled off to record keeping position.

Yup. Twice.
I was about to resign and he announced he was moving on so I got his job. The second time, I decided on Friday that I would not be returning on Monday. I cleaned out my office in the weekend and had my lawyer send them a letter. Not good optics when the director of engineering walked out. A string of others at my level soon followed.

Narcissists are attention vampires.
No attention? Things get really ugly pretty fast and they start to self destruct. Try it and report back.

Far far far too many. I have deleted my first response as I just don't want to ever have those people on my bad side.
So, yes. Yes I have. |

Yeah, I've have bosses that sucked big time. I have zero patience and don't even know much about how the game is played. Was never around for the next issue as I walked each and every time. As a result I have no resume'. If someone asks what I did I just reply "contractor." No one ever wanted to carry on a conversation about that so it's a one-word conversation stopper.
Suits me. We're kinda like Alaska crab fishermen, no one knows or understands.

I am the supervisor of a narcissist. I feel your pain...but I do admit, your pain must be worst than mine.
my utmost sympathies. he was the catalyst for my early retirement. he didnt force me out, but he did teeter the scale to. I am not having an office retirement party because I would spend 50% of my mic-time telling him off. hahahah... I have a family member that is borderline narcissist..I know it well. gives me goosebumps.

I'll add here, since you all have been with me for such a long time starting with my 911 journey.
my situation was real for me. after a few unpleasant encounters, I had to reach out to company EAP to speak with a professional. there was a trigger there in me, and a narcissist can sniff out a weakness immediately. I had to meet with a pro to reinforce various tools in my belt to maintain mental clarity. I reached out to my supervisor who coincidentally is the moron that hired the fool, and passed him on probation..I begged him not to pass him on probation after begging him not to hire him in the first place. nobody believed me. well, now my supervisor is EFFED with a capital F. he cannot even advertise my vacant position in fear this guy applies. I leave and will sleep fine. I didnt make this bed, so I am not sleeping it in. my supervisor didnt believe I would pull the plug on work. I saved and scrimped so I could have F-U money. .

I've worked with a couple of nutters. I worked with one guy that I think could have been a narcissist, but I wasn't his boss or vice versa. I mostly just kept my interaction with him low. I moved to a different team, and then he applied. I didn't think he was right for the job, but didn't want to tell the boss "don't hire that guy" in case I had some bias or something. I'm still in the same group and he's long gone (got put on an "improvement program", and left voluntarily).

I'm lucky to work with mentally healthy people. I'm glad you've been transferred now.

All my life I worked for small family owned businesses. The owner had to learn to be nice to employees to retain the good ones. If I had any issue, I went straight to the boss - owner and we settled the issue.
We had a great boss that took in his words, "early retirement" at age 92. He sold the company to a great guy that left us alone to make him a lot of money. Then unfortunately, he died. His idiot moron, (expletives deleted) stupid son stripped all of our operating cash, refused to let us upgrade anything, and chased away business. He fired us, sold the the building. He then trashed a fantastic historical archive of aerial photos dating back to 1947. I begged him to donat them the the Oklahoma Historical Society. He just threw them away, So yea, just one boss, that fired us. Best thing ever for me. Now I own my own company. So now I work for some crazy dude that is into Porsches. He is a lazy bum that makes me mow his yard, wash his cars, and do all the maintenance on them. I get even with him by sleeping with his wife!

I’ve had a lot of bosses, and can count the really good ones on one hand. Best thing about my current job is that I work with a team of legitimately good human beings that are great to deal with. People can make a huge difference, both pro and con.

My current boss, is somebody that I have worked with, at several companies over the last 26 years. He has a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality. You never know who’s going to show up when talking to him.

I had a manager a while back that would attempt to lie his way out of any situation he couldn't easily explain.
I had a catch phrase for him that I believe that I got from this site. "Often wrong but never in doubt".
