wow. my offices are lacking work. its slow for sure.

I resisted hiring an intern this summer, but my boss put the screws to me. he sold the kid. he said what I needed to hear. this young man, is on his second career. quit everything in the wine industry, and abandoned his viticulture degree..shunned it. haha.. It mirrors my own path so I hired him.

this is a full grown man. he is like that kid you see in movies..."why is the sky blue?' But whyyyyy! I kid you not, I get more emails from him than any other coworker.

he is lucky I am retiring soon. because I won't hire him. I like mouth shut, eyes and ears open - at least for the first week. this guy asked for the foreman's phone number on a 40million dollar job..hahahha.. on day two!!!

I need to quit listening to my boss. hahah..

for the record, I was an awesome summer intern. :D.

Interns are a PITA, the upside is that its a very effective long job interview.

Hopefully he is at least good at making the coffee.

Well, asking lots of questions sounds tiring and irritating, but there's got to be a limit. It can't be like a kid that asks "why" after every statement, and it should only be when it's not going to drag things down. Wow, asking for the foreman's cell!

I have worked with a couple of guys that asked a lot of questions, and I/we started out explaining everything, because both guys seemed really hungry for info. But then I/we realized that no matter how much or how well you explained it, neither guy EVER got any of the info (and both took copious notes!) and would ask the same questions 3, 5, 10 times. Both guys initially seemed OK, but both ended up being let go or quitting because they were just way over their head and the work was outside of their capabilities.

Speaking of retiring soon, how soon? I thought it was this month.

We had quite a few young engineering students come through our office. Most were dense but we did hire a civil and one ME student after they graduated. The idea was to mould them in to our creation doing things the way we liked.

Thankfully I don't have to worry about any of that anymore.

You've already retired - the punch clock hasn't seen it yet. Congrats.

Any intern I ever had only made extra work for me. Probably a "me" problem. I don't manage people very well.

You are a wise person. I’ll burn vacay until November 30. So technically my official separation date. But I’ll probably be in Asia. Wife letting me fly solo. Hehe.

This thread brought back memories of when my son was interning while going to school.
The owner of an electronics firm up in Nor Cal fancied himself a baseball team owner, so came down to SDSU and asked Tony G if he had any players that would like to play ball on weekends on his 'company' team while being an intern during the week.
My son and his catcher got volunteered/asked and decided to go. They got put up in a corp apt and went to work. Got a per diem (sp?) while playing on the weekends too.
When my son left, his boss told him if he ever needed a job, just come see him, he'd hire him in a heart beat.
My son now works for the largest aerospace conglomerate in the country and has 500 people under him. And yes, I'm damn proud of him.
