The Odessey
Finally got to see it. Going to see it again.
All of the acting was excellent as you would expect with the exception of miscasting Tom Holland. Zendaya was ok though. Saw it in 70mm, it didn't have the same special look as others I've seen in 70, notably 2001: A Space Oddessy and Dunkirk in theaters. The movie is still sold out for next two weeks in IMAX. Which sucks for the new Spiderman movie. Anyway, worth seeing in the theater. The last third it really came together. If you want to do some research: The Myth of Odysseus and Calypso was one I found. Circe is another. I don't know why Nolan failed Circe. <iframe width="855" height="481" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/f_bKjZeJBBI" title="The Odyssey | Official New Trailer" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I saw it last week!
One word... Epic! The best movie I've seen in a very long time. It's certainly worth seeing on the big screen. I thought Zendaya was near perfect as the goddess Athena. Highly recommended. |
Closing this.
Biggest reason is It feels way too much like an end-run around the mods. The other reason is because we mods don't feel like dealing with the drain circling crap that landed the prior Odyssey thread in PARF. |
After hearing from Randolph, and applying an edit he volunteered, I'm reopening this.
Let's keep this tread about the movie. First hint otherwise and I'll happily merge this thread with the one on PARF. |
I saw it yesterday in a regular theater with plans to see it in IMAX if it's good. I liked it a lot. It's not perfect, or Nolan's best IMO, but he showed some key adventures and conveyed the messages in Homer's poem. There we some genuine moments of horror in there, which surprised me. The cast was excellent overall with Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, John Leguizamo, and especially Samantha Morton. The 3 hours went by like it was 2, but there were some slow spots that could have been trimmed.

Interesting to see the different takes on the casting. Either way, it sounds like Nolan pulled off the scale of the story. I'll definitely catch it in theaters

Im curious how many people that liked the movie also liked the books?
I read it in a classics class with a prof who made the book come alive. For me Nolan has a way of sucking the life out of everything he touches. Watching his movies i feel like im getting lectured about something boring. Cant tell if its the pace, the camerawork or the square shaped story elements. Over organized? His movies just fail to surprise. Plus a bunch of memorable stuff is just gone. How could he smother such an entertaining story?! At least he kept the dog. |
Odysseus was a terrible navigator.

How so?

I think they could have done better with this movie. First, the armor isn't accurate for bronze age Greece. I also wondered why they didn't cast any Greeks, and why is everyone speaking English? I mean, the Bible is in English, so I know Jesus spoke it, but he wasn't around yet. And what happened to the Toga party and Delta Tau Chi? On top of all that, Dean Wormer's absence isn't mentioned, let alone explained!
This movie sucks! ;) |
This woman is brilliant. A very smart lady. You Guys and Gals are lucky to have her (University of Pennsylvania).
