944 odometer

My odometer stop working on my 86 944 so I took it apart. The main gear has been replaced. I noticed when I tried to turn the gear with finger, it was a bit was a bit bound up (stuck). I worked it through to the point where it spun freely and the odometer worked using my fingers. I put back in and it worked for about 10 miles and stopped working again. My guess is that it’s stuck again. Anyone have any suggestions? I will send off if needed but am trying to minimize cost if possible.
I’ve been tracking the miles since it stopped.
Thanks.

Is the replacement gear a friction fit or a dab of adhesive required ?

Sounds like a dab of adhesive is required.

I have never had a 944 do I cannot help, but I’ve been fighting a failing Speedometer and odometer in my 1992 Fox body Mustang. I hope you have more luck that me.

Thanks, good luck with yours as well. I did find a 10 page write up fixing them (good pictures). Seems to suggest cleaning everything really well and glueing the gear in place so it can’t slide out of position.
