2 AM and I'm up feeding a squirrel
The title says it all. It's 2 AM, and I'm up giving a baby squirrel his feeding. There's more to the story for later, but it's 2 AM, and I'm going back to bed.

 He's about 3 weeks old. 9:00 AM. We feed him a drop or two of puppy milk replacement and a drop of Pedialyte every couple of hours. This morning I'm seeing milk coming out of his nose, so I don't know if he is swallowing it or not. He's hanging on, but honestly I don't hold out a lot of hope for the little guy.

Been there, done that. 2 siblings howling for hours in the middle of the night for mom, got them inside, dropper fed them, named them Jif and Skippy, then felt nothing but bad when the inevitable happened. But I wouldn't have done anything different.

Well, the inevitable happened. We went up to give him his 10:00 feeding and he had expired. We tried, he tried, we all did our best, but the odds were against us. I told Vicki not to name him, don't get attached, but she did anyway. Goodbye, Oscar, we hardly knew ye.
I blame myself in a way. If I had covered the chase that they were using to get into the attic he would have been born in a tree outside and would never have been in our storage room to begin with.

Lots of times when there is something wrong with them,They are rejected from the nest.
That's typical of animal behavior so there may have been something wrong already.

@afterburn 549, I was thinking the same thing. Just a bad place to be born to begin with and then there's the mother nature thing where newborns are left behind for reasons only a squirrel knows.

YES, on the farm, sheep, goats etc sometimes would get rejected.
The animal kingdom has no place for a welfare system.

It must be the season. About 2 weeks ago I was outside adjusting the cover that is on my old Dodge truck and I started hearing a shrill sound. It was dark out and I had a light and panned it toward the direction of this ear piercing squeal and there was a baby squirrel on the ground and some ants were biting it. I quickly picked it up and took it into the house brushing ants off of the little guy and washed him/her off with some warm water. Once the ants were gone, it stopped squealing and was just sleeping. My daughter googled what to do and we followed instructions to make a warm nest in a box, use a warmed rice sock to keep the baby warm and place the box at the base of the tree where the nest is located. The idea is that the mother will come get her baby when she feels safe. Anyway, that is what we did.
I checked on things in the later part of the morning the next day and sadly found the little guy had died. I buried the poor thing near our pups. I felt so sad for the little guy but at least we tried. As stated earlier, there might have been something wrong with the baby squirrel and it had been pushed out of the nest. Last year I saw a strange group of leaves on the road going left and right and not following any sort of wind. It was a flock of baby ducks. I circled back and we were only able to rescue one of the entire hatch. It was beyond awful. But one survived. It is what you do. It hurts. Thanks for the effort. It matters.

A few years ago my wife & I were hiking not too far from the house when we came upon a baby mouse being bitten by ants. I picked it up, shook off the ants and gave it to my wife. She decided to take it home. We bought some goat milk at the market, and my wife fed it with a soaked art paint brush. It did fine and opened its eyes some time later. Of course my wife wanted to keep it. It grew into a nice little mouse that enjoyed being handled and petted. After a while we fed it rice and grains along with the goat milk. I took it out one night behind the house and let it go in some leaf litter hoping it would make it.

But it did not have the right circumstances to survive. Regardless of effort. Give yourself a pat for trying. And don't discount that good feeling next time around.

I keep a major wildlife rescue in my phone contacts. Over the years we have given them songbirds, a pheasant, a raven and a fawn.
They are good people. Hope for Wildlife, near Halifax, with a branch in the Annapolis Valley.
