Good idea, Lets get them to put their art all over Superman's fences and house. Maybe on his car too. He obviously appreciates it more than we do.

Dead graffiti artist identified as teen visiting from Houston

Police investigate scene where East Jefferson Levee District officer's vehicle struck and killed a graffiti artist

A graffiti artist who was struck and killed by a police vehicle on Kenner's West Return Canal levee has been identified as a 16-year-old boy who was visiting his father on the West Bank.

Victor Montano from Houston had been in the New Orleans area for about two weeks, Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway said Friday.

An East Jefferson Levee District police officer caught the boy spraying graffiti on the floodwall Thursday about 4 p.m. along the floodwall south of Vintage Drive.

"When he saw the police officer approaching, the male took off running," Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway said Thursday.

The officer followed in his Levee District sport utility vehicle, and it appeared that the youth was going to jump a fence, Caraway said.

As the officer's vehicle followed, the youth tripped and fell in front of the truck, which hit him.
Now that's a shame.

Perhaps. One thing people need to understand about art and artists is that they are trying to elicit an emotion. They are trying to make you "feel" something. Anger is, at times, the goal. Some art makes us feel uneasy. Some soothes. The artist is trying to mess with you.

Nice. Police officer kills a sixteen year-old with a can of spray paint and perhaps you are glad this child is dead? Most of the time I respect and enjoy the ideological banter here but this is WAY WAY outside those boundaries. It would be a huge understatement to say I find this offensive.

True. Sometimes it is destructive. No quarrel there. I was responding to someone's factually incorrect definition of "art."

I could piss on your leg, sign it and it too would be art. People arbitrarily associate value with the term "art" when they should not.

You've got it! Art is art. It is not necessarily good, or even legal.

There is some amazing graffiti out there, some is artistic/art, even if it is illegal. Most is crap. There is likely some that's so good that it's worth keeping.

Still, it can be art, illegal or not.

I saw this myself outside of the building where I work the other day. I took a picture with my phone, but accidentally erased it.

Expression is the definition of art?

So when a baby cries to express he's hungry, he's an artist?

When a person expresses his jealousy by keying your porsche, that person is an artist?

I express a lot of things. I expressed a 7 pound growler today. You wanna buy some art?

Yes. Again, art is sometimes not pretty. A very high proportion (perhaps all of us, frankly) of us are unaware of the true ratio of rationalism in our lives versus expressionism. Society is not shaped this way because it makes sense. It is shaped this way because that's how we like it. We think we behave rationally, with the occasional act of irrational expression. In reality, it is just the opposite.

the 08-01-2008 03:28 PM

And you believe that most people agree with your definition of art (i.e. that someone keying your car because they are jealous is art)?

Or you recognize that the vast majority of people would disagree with your definition, but they are all just wrong and you're right?

Being an armature artist (not graffiti) I find Supermans discourse very interesting.

There is some graffiti on display inside art museums.

However this is a random picture thread not a random philosophy thread.

So post some pics folks! (please)
