all I can make out thru the rust and dirt is S+W 357 Magnum. might clean it up a bit to see if I can find serial numbers but I can't tell if it's loaded or not

If you found the gun, I am assuming you did, you should turn it over to the state police before trying to pry open the cylinder. It could be important evidence, if it isn't then ask for it back. The can enhance the serial number and determine the ammo type if it's still loaded. A ballistics comparison is doubtful, but you never know.

Actually it is probably a Smith model 66 left in a leather holster, a Ruger would likely still be servicable.
