The least luxurious cruise in the world: North Korea launches its first liner (where cabins are shared and the ship is rusty)
North Korea launches first cruise liner | Mail Online
Quote:

During the 21-hour overnight cruise, which traced the length of North Korea's east coast, some passengers slept on wooden bunkbeds while others were assigned mattresses on the floor. Simple meals were served cafeteria-style on metal trays.....................

It remains to be seen how many Chinese tourists will be interested in the new tours. With incomes rising, Chinese are traveling abroad in rising numbers, thronging tour groups to Europe, Thailand, Japan and South Korea, with a small but growing number also making the short trip to nearby North Korea.

Maybe the rustic charm will appeal to the Chinese, I'm no expert, just feeling sad about what I see over there.

All aboard: The dock at Rason is run down with pot holed roads and dirt tracks down to the port

Quote:

Some 500 North Koreans, about half dressed in dark workers clothes and the others in office and traditional attire, waved off the ship in a choreographed performance on the pot-holed dock.
That's sad.

Sitka doesn’t have dock facilities for cruise ships, so all shore access is via tenders. In other uses, the tenders would be called “lifeboats,” for that’s their usual role—when not being used to shuttle us to shore, they’re hanging on hooks around the ship for use in case of emergency. Here’s a shot of one approaching the boat, with a full load of returning cruisers:

Two different airplanes. That one above is a PBY Catalina and the one higher up the thread is a Grumman Albatross. I know the PBY's story but not the Albatross's story.

joeblow 09-27-2011 06:51 PM

That is a PBY, not an Albatross...

1960
an eccentric british millionaire buys a catalina and decides to fly his kids around the world. they are camped on the beach in saudi arabia when beduin attack. the family makes it to the plane, but it is too shot up to take off.
they drift down the coast til making contact with authorities, who promptly arrest them on suspicion of being jews.

the embassy gets them out. everyone makes it home. except the plane. that is still sitting there.

the british guy eventually buys a second catalina and finishes the trip.
