I spent 4 years on the Big E and remember when we did full sea trials and the ship hit 42.5 knots as we passed the Norfolk bridge-tunnel and could have gone a bit faster as reactor power was only 96% on all 8 reactors. The CNO was on board and Rickover was in operating station #1 giving the orders on what to do! The decision was made to maximize the speed at 30 knots so the reactors would last a few more years and that was the wind needed, if dead calm, to launch the A5 Vigilante which at that time was the heaviest plane the Navy would shoot!
Here is a pict of one of the 'Connie's hanger bay fire doors when I did the tiger cruise a few years ago. They were sister ships and the engineering plant's were nearly exact the same.
