Just finished overseeing a project that included the complete overhaul of this steam turbine and centrifugal compressor.
That pic was taken at the begining of WWII when the machines were on the test stand after assembly.
The machines have been running 24 hrs/day for over 70 years. Fer persective yer looking at about 100 tons worth.

Sammy I guess you will not be there to know for sure but do you think it has a chance of running another 70 years?

...He learned almost too late that Man is a feeling creature, and because of it, the greatest in the universe. He learned too late for himself that men have to find their own way and make their own mistakes. There can’t be any gift of perfection from outside ourselves. When men seek such perfection they find only death—fire—loss—disillusionment—the end of everything that has gone forward. Men have always sought an end to toil and misery. It can’t be given, it has to be achieved. There is hope, but it has to come from inside—from Man himself...

Nopers, that process unit is slated to be mothballed in 4 years due to California's cap and trade evironmental laws.
There's a possibility it could be eventually sold and installed overseas but I'll probably be retired by then.

Sorry bout the pic, doan know how to crop using MS paint.
Them hold down bolts on the compressor's feet take a 4" socket. The turbine was originally rated at 4000 hp but we've upped that by about 50% over the years.

the last time it was overhauled was in 2003. it was running fine when we shut the unit down for maintenance and this machine was overhauled to make sure it runs well utill the next scheduled unit shutdown (4 years). That's how we do it in bidness.
