Frustrated Parent is a moron. It's not unusual for schools to teach students alternate ways of visualizing math using number lines. If he couldn't figure out what they were going for, he either didn't try or he's a moron.

In my experience, the smart kids use different mental tricks to do mental arthrimetic. Trying to force a kid to use number lines when it simply increases the complication for that child does seem moronic.
