Very cool. We were there for the commemorative mass drop at St Mere Eglise on June 8. It was impressive.

Looking through my Normandy photos, I found these which seem appropriate for today -

The town of Sainte Marie Du Mont was one of the first (the first?) towns liberated in the D-Day invasion. The main feature of the small town is the church. Remnants of some gunfire in the church is still visible. Photos below of the church exterior and interior and a photo of the first mass held after the invasion. I can only imagine - thankful to have survived and uncertain about what lay ahead.

For any that haven't done a Normandy tour, I highly recommend it. It is incredibly moving, humbling and being on the ground gives a much better sense of what was involved than books or movies can do.

That's why I tap the end of my 1/2" drive with a 2 lb sledge hammer, or I use a steel 3' long pipe over the handle of the ratchet......better leverage.

Thanks for those additional photos, Kevin. Very sobering. I would like to visit Normandy one day.

Meanwhile in NYC....

What engine is this??

devodave 12-28-2014 05:17 PM

I'm guessing it's a mailbox! I'd hate to put that in front of my place. Put up the third one of the season today. That would be a terrible waste of great looking machinery!
