Tomorrow morning I'm replacing a couple huge Bismarck Palms in my front yard that were killed by Palmetto Weevils. The Palmetto Weevil has never been a traditional pest of the Bismarck except for just the past couple years or so. It's like that with a few other popular landscape trees and palms - I believe having to do with climate change and also the disruption of nature by man.

I'm replanting with a different species.

One will be a Livistona saribus (see photos below) but the other I'm still contemplating. One candidate would be the Dwarf Budda Belly Bamboo:

Other choices are a large Bottle Palm or a Triangle Palm, both of which I have on hand as well as the DBBB.

This going to be fun!

My friends and I who are in the trade sometimes call this palm the Flintstones Palm because it looks cartoonish with it's wide leaflets (which don't really show in these pics), the way the canopy drapes downward, and the ridiculously long and curved black armament along the petiole.

How can you tell?

Very cool looking palm. My mom just had a palm removed from her front yard in Vero Beach. She had it treated for frizzle top a couple of years ago, and it recovered. But recently she had another problem and the tree guy said it was almost certainly going to die.

Baz, is that first plant up there (in post 70962) in the bamboo family, and does it spread/multiply like bamboo?

Thanks Steve - that palm in your photo is a Queen Palm and the issue is a lack of the miconutrient Manganese. Not to be confused with Magnesium. Manganese (and Magnesium) can be purchased as a sulfate (Manganese sulfate) in dry form (pelletized or powder) and applied to the palm to try to correct the deficiency. Many times it will and the palm will recover nicely. Sometimes the deficiency has gone on too long though and the palm doesn't recover, sadly.

Manganese sulfate is also referred to as Tec Mag in the trades.
Magnesium sulfate is also known as Epson Salts.

You could apply both products to all your palms once a year as a supplement without harm to the tree. Or just use a good balanced ornamental blend with a full micro package once a year. Feeding can also be done more than once a year as dictated by circumstances which vary from property to property and situation to situation.

Now what "could" be happening to that same Queen Palm right now is a disease known as Fusarium Wilt. Non-curable and if her tree has it the best thing to do is get it cut down and removed ASAP so it won't infect other Queen Palms in the vicinity. You can Google Fusarium Wilt of Queen Palms to get more details. Contact me by PM if I can be of any help also.

Hi John....yes it's in the Bamboo Family. It's a variety called Dwarf Budda Belly. Sensitive to cold (Zone 9b I think). It's a clumper so does not run. Pretty easy to maintain but the cold weather can be an issue. Interesting looking variety though for the stalks as well as the foliage.
