Thanks for the help. What a neat site. I'll have to visit when I feel a bit nostalgic. Grew up and lived in Portsmouth till 93 when I moved to Western NY. I started at the Navy Yard (as it was affectionately known) in 84, but worked at the other end and didn't get the opportunity to meander around. My dad, grandfather, and great grandfather all worked there as well as 2 uncles.

Thanks for your service as well as your family's, Dave!
We moved to Norfolk in 1955 when I was a year old. My Dad was in the Navy and was transferred from California were I was born. He retired 4 years later after a 20 year stint. We stayed there in the same house behind Janaf Shopping Center until 1970, 2 years after my Dad died (brain tumor) - then moved to FL after my Mom remarried a Coastie introduced to her by friends.
I was never in the service myself but both parents were plus my grandfather (Brooklyn Shipyard machinist).
We went to the base all the time......even to boxing matches! Hampton Roads was a very cool place to grow up....the field trips we took in grade school were pretty epic!
My oldest brother still lives there (Portsmouth).
