Isn't Coke the name of a coal byproduct?

Yes--and used in steel making--used to be lots of older coke ovens around SW PA. Frick was in the coke business prior to hooking up with Carnegie(and after their less than amicable parting as well)

I worked on top of Coke ovens back in 1979.

They heat coal making it into Coke, Coke burns hotter, hot enough to melt the iron out of iron ore. Of course you have to blast oxygen into it to really get it going, which is why they have those Blast Furnaces.

The Larry Car is on top, dumps the coal down into the ovens. The Pusher pulls off the side doors and pushes the Coke into train cars on the other side.

Very dangerous and hard work, happy to have survived it for five months.

We had a huge coke loading dock here at the port of Los Angeles... they would roll the train cars in one at a time and flip them upside down to dump them. As a kid it was quiet a spectacle, we would ride our bikes down to the docks to watch.

To say "That sucks" is an injustice to how much it sucks. Something that bridged the divide-gone because someone could.

My first engineering job was at the Coking Facility of Allied Chemical just off of Zug Island back in the 70's
