Think of it in terms of number of teeth per second. The size of the idler gears is irrelevant. The extra gear makes the cams on the central bank rotate in the same direction as the outer banks.

And the same idler gear principle applied in the sidewinder layout of this slot car chassis (designed to move the weight of the motor forward for better balance)... however, it was kind of hard for some guys to wrap their head around it, as I remember. We were very young and wet behind the ears in those days. :D
