My dad did that to several of his ratchets, he found them easier to use that way. I've since inherited them and I've left them that way. Of course, off is on and on is off, but who reads them?

There's a gravitational anomaly like this not far from my house called The Mystery Spot. Not much of a mystery though...some quirk of gravity causes you to lean 18° while your inner-ear balance mechanism tells you that you're standing straight up & down. They use several gimmicks within the "Spot" to heighten the effect. The trees in the area are all leaning too.
